Language Training.
Date du début: 11 juil. 2015, Date de fin: 10 juil. 2016 PROJET  TERMINÉ

Two teachers from our school, who have an knowledge of the French language, attended an immersion course in Salignac, July 11 to July 18th. One of the teachers has a Graduate Diploma in Primary School Language Teaching (French- First Class Honours) and studied French at undergraduate level. The other teacher attended a French course which was offered by the French Institute in Galway. She gained intercultural and linguistic experience through this course, which helped to prepare her for the immersion course. Both of the teachers have participated in previous Comenius programmes and brought the knowledge and experience gained in these projects to this project. During the course in Salignac, they enjoyed formal training (language and methodology sessions), cultural activities ( guided tours and social activities) and social conversation in French. LFEE EUROPE organised and delivered this course. Our school has a special interest in languages, we teach through the medium of Irish, we also teach English and have a Chinese teacher who comes to teach Mandarin. Our school is very diverse culturally, children attending our school speak many European languages. We have children in our school who speak Polish, German, French, Hungarian, Slovakian and Greek as their first language. We have now added French to the languages that we teach in our school. As a result of this project, French is taught once per week to our sixth class students. This has enhanced our multicultural school. We developed our competence as teachers in French and as a result our pupils' competence in the French language. We also learned more about the French culture and shared this information with our students during our classes. We used some of our organisational funds to take the students to Dublin on a cultural trip. We visited the Alliance Francaise, where the children viewed a French film with English subtitles, visited the Alliance's library and had lunch in the Cocotte French Restaurant. The afternoon was spent exploring French and Irish history at The Huguenot Cimetiere, the GPO and Collins Barracks. We recently hosted a French morning, we invited the Honorary French Consul to Galway, Ms Catherine Gagneux to address our students. The students were also addressed by Ms Marie Blom, a parent of one of our Junior pupils and a Parisien living in Galway and by Ms Nonie Baker, an Irish student who has just completed a year in Toulouse University. The students dressed in French clothes, served French food and had many interesting questions for our guests.. We all enjoyed a very educational morning. During the course of the project we shared new teaching methods / tools with our European colleagues many of whom we met on the course in Salignac. We also established a relationship with a French school in Saint Martin de Fragneau and our students exchanged SKYPE videos and penpal letters with the students of this school. We hope to foster closer cross border cooperation with our European peers and in so doing helping the children in our school to be more culturally diverse and accepting of children from other European countries who attend our school. We would like to contribute to a more stable, tolerant society.
