The project has allowed the school to have a teacher trained in foreign language and methodology to embed French into everyday teaching and learning at the school.
It has helped the school follow the ethos of a Curriculum for Excellence, find partners abroad to work closely with to deliver this and will in time allow pupils to use ICT to communicate with other schools in UK and abroad.
The project improved the competencies of the participant by assisting him to acquire and learn new vocabulary, improve and develop new teaching practices and gain confidence and competence at delivering French within a Curriculum for Excellence. It also enhanced understanding, awareness and appreciation of the culture of modern France.
The immersion training brought opportunities to develop new teaching methods and tools. It developed the confidence of the participant to establish formal links with French schools and will allow children from both Scotland and France to develop friendships and bonds and understand similarities and differences in school life and their wider culture.
The staff member who participated is a primary school teacher currently working in the first level. He had for some time demonstrated a keen passion for integrating French into his teaching through participation in the Scottish Government 1 + 2 initiative and other modern language CPD activities. The training offered opportunities for him to improve his language competency and enhance his teaching skills to deliver engaging French lessons to primary school aged children.
This was achieved through the participant:
• Improving his methodological expertise in the teaching of French to young learners
• Acquiring materials and ideas suitable for the teaching of the French at primary level
• Developing a cultural awareness and understanding of contemporary France, including the education system
• Improving his competence and performance in speaking and teaching French
• Using relevant and engaging internet and other ICT resources in his class.
Resources gathered during the project were placed on a shared drive within the school, to help learning and teaching throughout the school.
The project has raised awareness of the importance of languages and Europe within the school to pupils, staff, parents and other stakeholders.
Results of the training have been communicated to colleagues through presentations and/or workshops at staff training events.
These will in time impact:
• Locally – on staff, pupils and parents.
• Regionally – by transfer of skills within cluster groups
• Nationally – developing the ability to contribute to national language events
• European level – increasing European links with Primary/ Secondary schools
