Language development in cooperation

The City of Gothenburg has developed a goal to even out social differences among citizens. The local city district Lundby answers to that with 11 strategies to strengthen social sustainability and reduce inequalitities. To enhance this the pre-schools in Lundby focus on the children's language development in order to be given better opportunities to meet the goals of the school and thus in life. In the pre- school area Kville in Lundby we have started out this work through cooperation with the sector of Culture and Leisure, Social service, school and The Child Health Center to get a holistic perspective around the child. We meet children and families with socio- economically difficulties and we have a lot of children from other countries and with other spoken languages than swedish. Our focus in this project is childrens language development. Part of this is to develop an intercultural approach, where different cultures and languages are seen as assets. Therefore, we want to have an international component where we can learn from other countries how they take on the challenge of children and parents who where they don´t share any spoken language. We will also study how they involve and cooperate with parents. In total 6 pre- school teachers and 2 preschool directors will job shadow teachers at Tallinna Kadaka Lasteaed , a kindergarten in Tallinn, Estonia. The participants will be divided into two groups. Their task will be to study language developing methods used by the Estonian pedagoges and compare with their own. The participant will also experience not being able to understand the spoken langauage and thus themselves try different methods and gain greater understanding of others in the same situation.The teachers will document their experiences and share with colleagues in other kindergartens. The preschool directors will disseminate their experiences and results to their colleagues in the city district and also to politicians.This will eventually provide the opportunity to develop our language development methods in preschools and also develop our intercultural approach. This will lead to improved quality.
