The project named as “Congenital dyslexia and educational application in European Union” aims to provide related trainings for teachers and exchange of the teachers for witness the different educational experiences in different European Countries. There will be 30 teachers involved in the project from our school named Rauf Orbay Primary School.
Dyslexia, also known as alexia or developmental reading disorder, is characterized by difficulty with learning to read and with differing comprehension of language despite normal or above-average intelligence. This includes difficulty with phonological awareness, phonological decoding, processing speed, orthographic coding, auditory short-term memory, language skills and verbal comprehension, or rapid naming. Dyslexia is not a disease; it is a language-based learning disability. In Turkey, dyslexia forms 80 percent of all specific learning disorder. 12-24 percent of dyslexia is lack of attention and hyperactivity.
Children having dyslexia in EU have education with special needs, although it differs from country to country, as it is also defined by Convention on the Right of Child (BM, 1989).
Education is a sign of a development level of the country. Education shall be equal and accessible for every individual. Children having dyslexia live difficulties not only in language skills, but also in academicals skills, which causes problems in emotional and social behaviors. There are inclination to crime, emotional instability and psychological distortions in children having dyslexia. Not only education life of children, social life and community relations are negatively impacted by dyslexia which in return cause problem in family and education of children. Thus, dyslexia is a phenomenon which is closely related with family, education and community. In Turkey, 10 percent of population is estimated to have dyslexia, which means 50 students in school having 500 student populations. Thus, students having dyslexia needs special care and educational trainings to overcome problems they live in their educational life. Although there are specially designed private schools for the children with disabilities in Turkey, there are no programs of Ministry of National Education aiming children with dyslexia or learning disorders. In return, Guidance Research Center never proposes a special education program for children having dyslexia. Moreover, there are no supporting programs of Ministry of National Education aiming children with dyslexia or learning disorders.
Teachers to be able to assist students and guide them correctly, they have to evaluate and choose correctly. After defining the diagnosis, the teacher of the student shall use special educational method to handle the problem, lead and motivate the students patently. Unfortunately, in our country, the teachers are not prepared well enough to handle the students with a correct educational method.
The project at hand aims to;
- To analyze the educational methods used for dyslexia students in EU

- To have appropriate classrooms for special education for our students
