TERMINÉ
The aim of the project „Komplex innováció a két tanítási nyelvű oktatásban” (’Complex innovation in bilingual education’) is a planned and efficient, large scale renewal and modernisation of the comprehensive educational work and teaching methods at Szabó Lőrinc Primary and Secondary Bilingual School.Following last year’s success, the directorial board of our school realised the importance of the project and therefore announced their intention to continue. Some of our most motivated teachers are ready to develop their language skills and methodological competences while building valuable international relationships. Being in compliance with legal requirements for bilingual schools, this demand also fits the institution’s strategic and development plans. The courses chosen this year are in close line with the institution’s strategic plans and are meant to provide an opportunity for teachers to improve their knowledge and skills in their own field. An important aim of this project is to prevent our teachers from ‘burning out’, as well as to support and reward them for their hard work.English and Hungarian bilingual teaching has been implemented in our school for 17 years now, which often imposes a lot of extra burden on our teachers on top of their regular duties. Such requirements can only be met through continuous individual development, renewal and an effective cooperation with colleagues. The current project proposal therefore aims to address the potential areas for improvement mentioned above. To achieve our set aims, nine teachers from all sections and levels of our school are travelling to the United Kingdom in July and August 2016 to take part in language and teacher training courses. For eight of them the courses will take twelve days, for one of them five days.Beyond the improvement of language skills, our top priority when selecting courses was to deepen our teachers’ academic and methodological knowledge essential for their daily work as well as to broaden the curriculum for some of the English-language subjects in our school. Apart from the above considerations, we are also aware of the numerous additional benefits the courses offer, including drama activities, teamwork techniques and motivation methods. Some phases of the project involve difficult tasks to solve, which we believe can initiate and perpetuate a fruitful development trajectory for both our individual teachers and the institution as a whole.Over the preparation period, participants can gain experience in writing project proposals while coordinating and distributing their tasks in a fair and equitable manner. Some are provided internal courses to refine their language skills and all participants take the necessary steps for a successful mobility and prepare their presentation materials.During the process of dissemination, participants share their knowledge and skills gained over the courses by holding workshops, presentations and lectures, demo lessons and writing articles. Due to a large scale multiplicator role they can effectively spread the word by being able to reach out to a number of different bodies, including The Association for Bilingual Schools, the International Association for Teachers of English as a Foreign Language, diary on the Internet, etc. They also contribute to the development of the school’s proposed English-language website, as well as the continuous improvement of the current one by adding relevant materials and links and introducing innovative opportunities through sites such as eTwinning. They actively contribute to the establishment and widening of our international relations and take part in co-operative European projects. The project provides a linguistic, academic and methodological rejuvenation for our participating teachers. They can integrate the experience gained into their everyday work and can make good use of their improved language skills both at school and in their community. Throughout the dissemination period they can share their experience with their colleagues in their own school, in local teachers’ associations and over larger scales as well.In the short term the project brings the participants improved language skills, professional development and a valuable international networking experience. In long term perspectives, it is also highly significant for the school and its wider environment by providing much-needed opportunities for our institution to prove its academic excellence, open up new perspectives and gain increased recognition at a European level.Being faithful to the creed of our school: „Szép volt a vágy, hogy Semmi Sem Elég!” (’The wish that Nothing Is Enough was beautiful!’) Lőrinc Szabó: Cricket music 347.
