The Gymnasium auf der Karthause in Koblenz and the IX .Lyzeum in Krakau agreed on the mutual visit program “Mutual Visits as a Way of Improving Lessons“ in the context of personal mobility in the school sector. The cooperation between these schools offered diverse opportunities to improve the pedagogical, cultural and professional skills of teachers from both schools in the partnership. On their mutually prepared mobility the participants learned about the Polish school system and how lessons are prepared and taught at Polish schools. Our school profited greatly from learning about the way a Lyzeum in Poland functions and about Polish life and culture with its traditions and rituals. Thus the participants developed an appreciation of the cultural diversity of our neighbouring country. This enrichens the already existing forms of intercultural competence of the individual colleagues.
The international mobility with Poland consisted of two phases. In the first phase (June – Oktober 2015) the teachers prepared for the trip to Poland in an job training in which they learned about the Polish school system and were taught relevant parts of Polish culture and history. After that they traveled to Poland during the autumn break in 2015.
Five teachers of the Gymnasium auf der Karthause were involved in the mobility program with these subjects: Maths, Science, P.E., English, German and history. Unfortunately, one teacher had to resign from the trip at the last minute due to health problems, the other teachers who went to Poland gave up part of their autumn break as a sign of their interest .
The visit lasted 5 working days; they visited 3-4 lessons daily. The lessons were discussed before and after class. Additionally the German teachers participated in school life, talked to others teachers and documented their insights in written preliminary reports. In their free time they experienced Polish culture and history.
The mobility enhanced the comprehensive understanding of processes and systems of teaching that lead to the entrance requirement for higher education. The German teachers learned about similarities and differences that Polish students experience at their Krakau school and how they are individually supported in their learning process.
In the European context our schools has now the possibility to interact internationally with foreign schools, for example a school in the middle of Europe. This way other teachers will also be won for cooperation with partner schools and will enable their students to see the benefits of contacts to Poland and to learn from experiences abroad.
