The aim of our project is to improve the intercultural competence of our (future) kindergarten teachers and their ability to teach German as a foreign/ second language, as well as to broaden their horizon. Regarding the situation in Germany at the moment, it becomes obvious that dealing with different cultures and children whose first language won't be German will be more and more important in the near future. This means that teaching German as a second language will also be a task the kindergarten teachers have to deal with. The experience of getting to know a different culture and living in a place where German might not be the only language that is spoken enables the students to develop some empathy for non-native speakers of German, not only for the children they will be dealing with all day, but also for their parents who often struggle more than their children when it comes to learning a new language and adapting to a new culture. The cooperation between our school and the two kindergartens in Praha and Klagenfurt exists since 2012. Every year, we can send up to two students in their second year of training to these bilingual kindergartens (Praha: Czech and German/ Klagenfurt: German and Slovenian). That means that our students do not only possess theoretical skills, but also made practical experiences because they successfully completed at least one internship in another kindergarten in Germany, often they even bring more experience with them. This combination of theoretical and practical knowledge ensures that not only our students benefit from their internship and the experiences they make abroad, but the kindergarten also benefits as our students can help with the daily routine and be a helping hand. After our application procedure, four students per year are chosen to get a placement in either Praha or Klagenfurt. First of all they have to hand in their letter of motivation, their CV, a reference letter from a teacher and their latest school report. We have certain standards, e.g. at least a B in the subject "didactics and methodology". Then they are invited for a personal interview, only then the appropriate students are choosen. Those get support from our coordinator for internships abroad when it comes to preparing the journey and the stay (flight, a place to live, insurance, etc. ). When they are in Praha or Klagenfurt, they also stay in touch with their "didactics and methodology" teacher to get support when it comes to professional questions/ questions related to their working field. As mentioned before, the intention of our school offering internships abroad is to prepare our students for their future as kindergarten teachers and to prepare them for dealing with different cultures and languages, as well as being able to teach German as a foreing/second language. Moreover, the experience of working and living in another country also helps to increase their self-confidence. In addition to that, not only the students who go abroad should benefit from the experiences they make. Once they are back, they should tell their classmates about their experiences and there will be time in the lessons to reflect on these special experiences.
