Volunteers for Cottonera is an informal group of youth who came together last year with the aim of addressing the needs of children deriving from socially and economically deprived households within the Cottonera area. Our project will involve once again the organisation of an eight-week summer school for children within this area. This project will therefore have two main objectives. The first objective is that of forming a group of maximum 20 youth volunteers (including the initial participants) so as to be able to provide a quality service to the young children attending the summer school, whilst providing the youth with an experiential opportunity to exercise their active citizenship through volunteering and civic engagement during the summer months. In the preparatory phase of the project, our extended group will be participating in informal training workshops concerning self-awareness, project management, conflict management and teamwork, amongst others. The second objective of this project is to organise a summer school 'with a difference' for socially and economically deprived children from the Cottonera area. These will be children ranging from 5 to 11 years of age. One of the main themes of the summer school will be that of healthy behaviours. This will be done through the practice of out door activities and grassroots sports, moreover by including a healthy breakfast as part of our project we will convey the message of healthy eating. Other themes which will be addressed through interactive activities during the summer school will include self-esteem, sharing and teamwork, cultural diversity and the importance of active participation. Both informal and non-formal learning methods will be applied with the children during the initiative. This experience will also serve as one of non-formal learning for the youth volunteers as they get engaged in preparing for and implementing the activities to be carried out with the children.
