Permaculture Danmark is an organisation working with education in permaculture for sustainable development. Permaculture is growing globally and in Denmark and has prompted an increase in demand on education and services.
The human resourcebase in Denmark is limited and new knowledge and educational methods are sought in Europa. A previous jobshadowing and capacity building activity has already been fruitful in combination with a Leonardo da Vinci partnership on "Sustainable Ways of Teaching". The Danish adoption of the "Learning and Network Demonstration" (LAND) project is a direct benefit of the cooperation with especially Permaculture Association UK. The concept of LAND projects will be implemented in several European countries and thus provide a growing learning community of permaculture.
The purpose of the Adult Staff mobilities project is to build capacity in Denmark, with a view to fulfilling the growing demand for permaculture services and education. Permaculture is a holistic design science built on ethics and principles focusing on taking care of nature, people and a fair share of resources. With this point of departure and understanding of the educator's role, learning and training in all sustainable and regenerative practices from nuts as a niche production to transition of local communities is performed. Especially marginal areas and local communities can benefit from permaculture and as a source of renewal.
9 educators, 2 board members and 1 project coordinator participated in the Adult Staff mobilities project.
- 3 educators are associated with a LAND centre on Fejø/Lolland and have their background in local transition and entrepreneurship. The Baltic cooperation is very present in their local community and they look to the east towards the local eco-village found along the shores of the Baltic Sea. This has given opportunities to accredit Permakultur Denmark and one LAND centre for EVS.
- Other 2 educators wished to visit Germany on a combined permaculture and eco-village design education course. However, the course that was intended for the mobilities was cancelled and a new partner in Sweden, Ridgedale Permaculture, replaced this cooperation. The cooperation with Ridgedale will continue in the future to inspire regenerative farming. This is one of the most active and innovative permaculture educators in Europe and educators are bringing home first hand insights on regenerative farming practises.
- 2 educators concentrated on forest gardening and production of nuts which is a sustainable and carbon storing alternative to conventional agriculture. This learning is now practiced at LAND centres and has resulted in the development og forest garden courses and further development towards larger scale food forest systems.
- 1 educator wished a longer stay as an intern working with forest gardening. This has resulted in a research collaboration on European level (Food Forest International Research Network - FFIRN).
- 1 educator got a permaculture design certificate course in Ireland and has now become part of the education group around one LAND centre in Copenhagen.
- 1 educator and 1 project coordinator have attended Diploma trainings in UK. This has enabled the project coordinator to obtain a Diploma in Applied Permaculture, which is required for teaching on certified courses and taking on diploma apprentices. The diploma has been a bottleneck in Denmark with too few diploma holders. The new diploma holder have already 8 apprentices in Denmark and abroad. Furthermore, the insights in the English diploma system has informed the Nordic cooperation around the diploma system.
The building of capacity has strengthened education in permaculture and teachers' empowerment. It has primarily been integrated through the LAND network.
The collated experience of this capacity building project is being integrated in the European cooperation and inspire countries that also experience a growth in permaculture. The strengthening of the Danish human resource base through the mobilities has provided opportunities for cooperation and work within permaculture and sustainable development both in Denmark and other European countries. The demand for permaculture education is increasing and there is room for many more educators and both general and specialised courses.
