The objective of the mobility project of Espoo Senior School for Adults is to integrate internationality into the school curriculum. International staff development programs promote the reformation of teaching which is in progress in senior high schools. Furthermore, the objectives of mobility projects endorse the forthcoming curriculum. We are looking for learner-focused ways to study and a creative and versatile use of ICT in an international environment as part of education. The upcoming computer-based matriculation examinations (the national “A-levels”) mean that teachers are required to prepare new kinds of tasks and assignments online on their own initiative and also to use networks as everyday learning environments. As for foreign languages, the tests and exams used in senior high schools are approaching the methods in use in the rest of Europe. Hence, the comparability of the Finnish matriculation examination with the European framework of reference in language skills is one of our objectives of the mobility activities. The new kind of matriculation examinations will enable us to also test oral skills, just as in the rest of Europe. In this initiative we will bring international activity into the teaching of humanities and sciences, the focus being on programs dealing with the processing of data and learning.
9 subject teachers, 3 of whom teach humanities and sciences, will apply for programs that concern new learning environments, the use of ICT in teaching and the testing of (oral) language skills.
Moreover, the target areas will be explored through two job shadowing periods in a Spanish EOI-institution. A further aim of these periods is to create a permanent basis for common communication and the exchange of information.
We are also hoping to gain know-how in cross-cultural knowledge, interaction and cooperation, which are much in need in our school with 440 students speaking some other language than Finnish as their native language.
The good practises and networks learned and built during the mobility projects will be brought into teaching, and shared with the whole teaching staff and the organisation on a website created for this purpose.
Most of the programs will be held in each of the teachers´ own target language area, which allows the teachers to integrate authenticity into their classes and also to compare methods of evaluation in the two countries.
Teachers who take part in these mobility projects will put their new expertise to good use in their own subject groups, inform them about the contents and the networks gained, which will also be applied in the whole school in a diverse learning environment. The supply of web courses will be expanded in the near future in Espoo Senior School for Adults, and the competences and experiences acquired will serve us in planning forthcoming web courses, preparing new kinds of online exams with regard to the computer-based matriculation exams, and utilizing authentic materials. The future learning environments of our school will force us to break out from the traditional classrooms, and these mobility projects will give us tools for this particular need on an international level. Since 2015 Espoo Senior High School for Adults has been part of Omnia, joint authority of education, and in this diversified entity we are expected to offer innovative solutions that can be put into practise in every level and branch of this complex.
