Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence Montreal
Date du début: 1 sept. 2016, Date de fin: 31 août 2019 PROJET  TERMINÉ

As a joint initiative between Université de Montréal and McGill University, the proposed bilingual Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in Montréal (JMCEM) will serve as a key hub for European Union studies in the city of Montréal, the province of Québec, and for the international community. Targeted at students, researchers, civil society, and the wider public, the Centre will build upon the existing strength of academic excellence in EU studies in Montréal, increase the visibility of EU studies activities at both universities, and foster an enhanced understanding of the European Union. Its unique bilateral structure that joins together the leading French-language and English-language universities in Canada makes it an excellent environment in which to promote EU studies both nationally and internationally. The theme “The EU: Policies, Institutions, and Citizens” will guide the Centre’s activities during the three-year period of the grant. The Centre’s leadership team will organize multiple activities around this theme, most notably three academic workshops bringing together scholars from North America and Europe, an annual public speaker series linked to a well-advertised, innovative interdisciplinary graduate course on European Studies, and Jean Monnet Debates that will bring high-profile speakers on EU-related themes to the public. The Centre will have a measurable impact on teachers, researchers, students, and the policy and business community. It will do so by strengthening and expanding links with its European academic partners through their participation in our workshops and speaker series, consolidating its reputation in EU studies. The Centre will produce tangible research results and knowledge through a variety of deliverables. Our research projects and their associated workshops will lead to multiple articles in international peer-reviewed journals, university press books, working papers, op-eds and articles of general interest.
