PROJET
TERMINÉ
This application seeks to focus and deepen the activities of the European Union Institute in Japan, Kyushu (EUIJ-Kyushu). Since 2011, the EUIJ-Kyushu has played a pivotal role in disseminating information and research on the EU throughout South Western Japan. Its activities have been highly appreciated that Kyushu University and the EU Delegation in Tokyo agreed to extend the EUIJ-Kyushu funding (originally due to end in March 2015) up to 31 March 2016. The cost of activities for the 5th year is covered by a surplus from the initial EU grant, while all personnel costs are borne by Kyushu University. With the assistance of Jean Monnet (JM) funding, we plan to make the EUIJ-Kyushu of the second generation, Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence-Kyushu (JMCoE-Q), a hub of regional cooperation throughout East Asia by focusing on mobility and harmonization at a sub-national level. We will do this by (a) reinforcing our EU-related taught courses, specially at a postgraduate level; (b) integrating the EU Diploma Programmes (EU-DPs) entirely into the regular curriculum of the university; (c) undertaking more training and outreach involving local officials, industrial and commercial stakeholders; and (d) striving for a more balanced disciplinary focus in all our activities. This JM application coincides with two important Japanese government initiatives. One is the ‘Super-Global Universities’ programme for higher education internationalization. This aims to give Japanese graduates the knowledge and skills to engage effectively with the world outside Japan. Kyushu University, the partner organization, is the only elite ‘Super Global’ institution in South West Japan. The other initiative promotes innovation in ‘Special Designated Areas’ (Tokku), of which Fukuoka is one of six throughout Japan. This programme grants each Tokku more autonomy in a specific field – in the case of Fukuoka, “entrepreneurship”. These two initiatives promise strong synergies with JMCoE-Q’s activities.
