The objective of the ITISS project is to provide real time travel information to transport users while they are on the move. Such information is generally provided now either via the internet or call centre services, although text message alert services are also available in some places. The 3.2 M euro project will develop the delivery of location specific information from existing travel databases to a range of new media, particularly mobile devices and Personal Digital Assistants. By delivering real time information about public transport, the project aims to encourage motorists to make greater use of other of modes, like buses and trains, so cutting car use. ITISS, in which the UKs Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive is leading nine other partners, is transnational in nature, both because it involves sharing information and addresses issues of common concern, notably reducing traffic congestion. Achievements: The main outcome of the ITISS project was the development of an international journey planner combining both local transport at the start and end of an international journey with the air or rail trunk link to give people the most effective journey options for long distance journeys. A demonstration product was developed that combined international travel opportunities (e.g. international rail, air and some cross-channel ferry services) with door to door multi-modal journey planners in Germany and the UK to demonstrate that it was feasible to overcome integration issues to create a multi-modal international journey planner. Further development of this concept was considered to be a feasible option, though more work would be needed on the development of standardised interfaces to fully realise the potential of such services.
