The more skilful the staff is the more positive results can learners get. There is a direct link between a teacher’s professional competence and students’ performance and achievement. Therefore teachers need to get some input in their professional knowledge and skills time after time. Teachers also need to share experience of assessment and teaching methods and tools as the traditional ‘chalk and talk’ way of teaching is considered less effective nowadays. The school’s staff need to renew and develop their foreign language skills as well as acquire new teaching approaches. Grobiņa municipality schools would like to experiment and teach some subjects in foreign languages after having learned in the courses and reserached the experience in other European schools. Through participating in courses and study visits teachers and the school administration will have got an input how different subjects are taught in other European countries, especially when applying CLIL approach which is new in Latvia. As it is known, some European schools carry out very successful changes in their national curriculums and it is worth learning from the colleagues in these countries. There are experiences that could be introduced in our schools, especially on teaching basic skills in the elementary school. The project “Introduction of CLIL instruction in Grobiņa Municipality Schools” will be carried out through study visits and study courses. The study visits will allow the administration and staff of Grobiņa municipality schools to observe examples of good practice in the management of a variety of schools in European countries. The study courses will help improve teachers’ skills and competencies in key areas such as communication in English in European contexts (e.g. development of oral and written skills for formal and informal interactions with members of other schools in Europe, institutional presentations to disseminate best practices of Grobiņa schools in Europe, etc.); goal setting and action planning, assessment and evaluation, etc.). Teachers will also exchange their experience on effective classroom management, the use of resources to support learning activities, the attention to a diverse range of learning needs, the assessment procedures; etc. The participants will be introduced to the most modern and innovative methodologies in teaching their subject. The course will be carried out in an international group thus teachers will get in contact with other European teachers in order to open further opportunities for mobility and school partnerships. The European context and the international and intercultural composition of the participating group which is expected to attend the programme, will create more diversity of international and intercultural experiences than similar training courses in Latvia. It will give students of our school to link with other schools, and to open the possibility of establishing future partnerships under the new Erasmus+ Program. Having attended the study courses, the teachers of Grobiņa municipality schools will prepare a plan how some themes of exact subjects will be taught in foreign languages - English or German. Based on the observed practices in European schools a set of activities how to improve students' reading skills in primary school will be created.
