Introducing the European Union in classroom of Tsinghua
Date du début: 1 sept. 2015, Date de fin: 31 août 2018 PROJET  TERMINÉ

This proposed Jean Monnet module covers a suite of 2 undergraduate courses and 1 scholarship program for post-graduate students.Tsinghua University (THU) is one of the top two most important universities in China, together with Peking University. The recent three generations of Chinese national leaders, namely President Xi Jinping, former President Hu Jintao and former Premier Zhu Rongji, are all alumnus of THU; while every year many new graduates from THU enter the government. Given THU's strong historical links with the United States, Japan with Russia; the teaching and research in and cooperation with these three countries have been strong. In contrast, THU's exchange with and interests in Europe has been weak. At present, no regular course, neither undergraduate nor post-graduate level, is offered on the EU or its relations with China. This absence of the EU does not only mean the EU’s invisibility in the classroom of THU but also among future leaders of China. The EU should wait no more to be introduced to THU students. This module proposes two new taught courses on the EU/Europe and China-EU relations in undergraduate level. The student number of each course is expected at 35, with one-third of quota reserved for students from non-social science major. THU's undergraduate level course is 3-hour lecture per week for 16 weeks followed by exam in the 17th-18th weeks. This module starts two new courses, one on Comparative European politics and another on the EU and its relations with China. To attract the best students, an end-of-year grant is created for the top student in each course for a trip to Brussels or a summer course in the EU.For post-graduate students, this module creates annul presentation-competition on a popular topic in China related to the EU/Europe (e.g. the recent huge depreciation of China's FX reserve in Euro). The best three presentations are prized with book coupons and cash.
