Context and background In 2012 we started with vvtoE. We bought the method Take it easy . A modern digital method with a native speaker. By now we find a lot of lessons too difficult for our pupils so we have to give more explanation ourselves. In our school there is a majority of pupils for whom English is the third language. That needs more knowlege from the teacher about this subject. Purpose: We want to equip our teachers with more knowledge and skills in Englis We go with 5 teachers and the principal to Engeland to follow the Pilgrims cursus in Canterbury during 7 days. Activities: Teaching the 4 skills (listening/reading/writing/speaking) • Creative activities for Young Learners • Classroom management skills • Chants, rhymes and songs + storytelling, drama and music • Using communicative learning activities in Primary teaching contexts • Pronunciation work (through children’s songs and rhymes) • Work on grammar and vocabulary • Language for the classroom • Building confidence in teaching in and through English - particularly through drama activitiesWe want the teachers of our school to improve the skills of their English We send 5 teachers and a director of our school for 7 days to the Pilgrims course in England, Canterbury. We want in the future give more lessons in our school in English ( CLIL) We want to share the things we learned, attitudes, skills, methodes, ideas, didactics in and outside the school. This development fits perfect in the profile of our school De Meerpaal: "De school where language lives" We have chosen to offer early English language teaching (from group 1), because we would like to offer the children to prepare for an international society . The English language initiative will offer the child a much wider opportunity for their future . We have opted for English as it is a global language that is frequently used and because there are more and more English words frequently used in the Dutch society which helps with the familiarity. Of great importance is that children are then exposed as much as possible to the native English, because they have in their early years a great ability to develop good pronunciation and fluency. This is the key objective we would like to offer to the children. By increasing their capability with the English language, children can apply this outside their school time at a younger age, for example, on vacation and on the Internet. This allows us to increase their freedom. The team of teachers and management team guided professional organizations in order to increase their teacher proficiency and their pedagogical knowledge to give good English lessons. After two years using vvtoE the skills of the students will rapidly improve. We like the children to continue to have support for learning needs, and will therefore need to increase the language skills of teachers. We also want to integrate English more in the future in other subjects. We would like to complement our own training programme with a number of motivated teachers who are keen to follow training in Pilgrims with an international impact as a supplement. These teachers have extensive experience with primary school teachers from many countries that have adopted English and can offer tailor-made courses to meet our learning needs in an international environment. Training courses with an international group will be incredibly valuable. The meeting with teachers from other countries is a practical approach and the methodologies that the Pilgrims have used to increase its effectiveness and self-confidence, learning with head, heart and body are sound techniques. The teacher is central to learning, creativity, commitment and fun which are essential elements to learn for a lifetime. Five teachers at the school will participate in the course and the director. They are motivated to give the implementation process a boost. The course will enhance their own skills, enhance teaching methods, expand networking and experiences which are important goals we want to achieve. This new knowledge gained will transfer from the group to the other team members and thus strengthen our implementation process and accelerate it. We therefore expect that the course will provide a positive contribution to the education of our students. By expanding the skills of the teachers, they can continue to challenge their students in learning the English language on the long run.
