Increase of the waterway traffic on the Danube river and port Vukovar, sets demands for building bigger winter shelter on the wider area of Vukovar. Winter shelter is natural or artificial body of water in the waterways which is equipped and trained to provide safe shelter and in conditions of ice on the waterways.Existing natural winter shelter in Opatovac is the only winter shelter on Danube river in Republic of Croatia. Its capacity (max 14 vessels) and the conditions it is offering do not satisfy real needs. According to the opinion of Vukovar Port authority about the necessity of winter shelter, it is outlined that in the case of ice, it is necessary to store in winter shelter 25 vessels in transit and 10 vessels that are in the port at that time. According to that, the capacity of winter shelter should be 35 vessels.The new winter shelter would be situated in Opatovac, in branch of Danube, on the east side of INA dock for loading. The new winter quarters would be developed west of the areas mentioned ports. Inside of that area according to the developed solutions, it will be possible to store 23 standard vessels dimensions 76,5m x 11,4m.Area of the new winter shelter is designed in a way that on the right side of the branch will be boat dock for vessels. The north side of the branch would be used for formation of the access of the fairway and turning spot. Winter shelter in Opatovac would be of great importance for the Republic of Croatia because it will consist not only from the winter shelter for vessels on Danube but also from Petroleum storage-loading terminal and ship repair terminal to maintain the fleet. Given the dimensions has enough room for all three functions and will have no negative impact on the environment.ObjectivesThe main objective of the project is increasing river transport on the Danube and in port Vukovar and also to protect all vessels in transit and those vessels in port in case of occurrence of ice. The winter shelter will also be of a great help for development of nautical tourism.
