Social integration of ethnic groups and their mutual tolerance are the matters of great concern among the political quarters of Europe. Migrants tend to concentrate in the cities; urban planning and management must take account of the needs and concerns of the ethnic groups. Urban authorities must make urban planning decisions with account for the concerns of ethnic groups and prevent ghettoization and criminalization of particular urban areas. Migration-related problems affect the interests of all European states, including Russia; they should be tackled by a joint effort of the states willing to develop a unified policy and a pattern of actions to accept, accommodate and integrate migrants and to ensure the democratic rights and freedoms. The mission of the project is (1) to analyze the effective standards and methods in order to facilitate the implementation of the principles of socially sustainable urban planning, (2) to develop an educational module that will convert urban design and urban planning into environmentally safe, economically efficient and socially responsible practices. This project is multi-disciplinary; it incorporates the expertise accumulated in urban and architectural design, sociology, psychology and law. The core project deliverables are as follows:1) Original technologies and innovative methods of teaching;2) A study guide covering the subject matter in question; methodological recommendations designated for practical classes and students’ independent work;3) The training of 180 bachelor and master students; refresher training of 40 lecturers;4) One monograph and six research articles;5) A science conference covering the problems of European integration and socially sustainable urban planning and design.
