INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION ON AN E-LEARNING PLATFORM ENVIRONMENT(MOODLE)

PROJET
TERMINÉ
The members of teaching staff in our school(Mrs Antigoni Bratsoli, Mrs Christina Gklovanou and Mr Panagiotis Toumpos) selected intercultural and multicultural education within an e-learning environment, e.g. Moodle, as their topic on interest. The topic was selected by the teachers as it bore a close relationship to the real needs of their institution and was relevant to their professional interests and qualifications.
This Erasmus+ KA1 mobility project focused on intercultural education introducing techniques for facing cultural challenges in contemporary schooling systems, and enabled participants to develop new skills in ICT teaching environments, such as the use and management of a digital classroom, e-learning platforms and advanced software.
The goals of the specific project for the participants were the following:
• To become deeply involved into the concepts of cross-cultural education
• To acquire strategies for best teaching practices directly implementable in the classroom
• To familiarize ouselves with advanced technological environments, like e-learning platforms (Moodle
• To be actively engaged in virtual teaching
• To become sensitized to issues facing people with special needs
• To develop a new educational tool which can be directly implemented in our educational system (Welcoming protocol for foreign students)
All the above taken into consideration, the project took place in Ferrara, Italy between 21/3 -25/03 2016 and the participating teachers were trained and enriched our knowledge in the following areas:
• We were informed about methods of welcoming and integrating foreign and other-language students in Italian schools.
• We visited the Italian school “Scuola Primaria Statale A. Manzoni”, where we met and cooperated with Italian teachers becoming involved in actions related to cross-cultural education.
• We participated in work groups in workshops where we developed a Welcoming Protocol for foreign and other-language students.
• We were familiarized with the term ‘cross-cultural mediator’, what the responsibilities of this post are and discussed how such a post could be introduced in the Greek educational context.
• We were trained in work groups in how to manage e-learning sessions in a virtual classroom utilizing the Moodle platform; however, we needed more practice in that area as time was not enough.
• We enriched our knowledge on learning difficulties aiming at improving the school environment for sensitive learner groups.
• We were able to network with colleagues in other countries forming constructive cooperation networks.
• We assessed the extent to which intended goals were achieved and pinpointed weaknesses.
The impact of our project when we came back to Greece was very large. The Teachers’ Board in our school was informed of the learning outcomes and implications of the project and our colleagues were strongly interested in the Welcoming Protocol and the role of the Intercultural Mediator. Other colleagues in schools in our teaching district were similarly intrigued. Cooperation between our school and other institutions was reinforced and our school, having attained a European educational profile, opened up to society and the European community.
Dissemination of the outcomes of our project was achieved in multiple ways:
• The school website was updated with information about the project.
• Announcements were made in social and professional online networks (Facebοok, , LinkedIn)
• E-twinning network was similarly informed
• There were presentations made at the convention of “Neos Pedagogos” (New Educator)
• Printed informative material was distributed to all institutions involved in the project.
• There were seminars organized in our educational district.
• New cooperation schemes were initiated with schools in our educational district aiming at materializing further Erasmus + KA1 projects in the future and colleagues in these schools were encouraged to become involved in European projects.
• We presented the “Intercultural Suitcase” (an educational tool for intercultural education) inside and outside of our institution through seminars organized in our educational district.
It was also made known (in oral and written form) through all the above dissemination actions that the project was an Erasmus+KA1 project funded by the European Union and was realized under the auspices of the Greek National Scholarship Agency (IKY), while appropriate logos were used.
In conclusion, we, the members of teaching staff of the 174th Primary School of Athens who participated in the project, had an extremely constructive and positive experience. We are also certain that the short-term and long-term benefits are and will be great for all of us involved since we gained valuable knowledge, we became familiar with teaching tools which are directly implementable, can be disseminated and integrated in the Greek teaching context.
