Intercultural Competences for Youth in Central and Eastern Europe

The European Voluntary Service project was attended by 10 volunteers from different Eastern Partnership countries - young people interested in acquiring or expanding intercultural competences. Volunteers worked during 6 months in Poland - in the “East-West Mutual Understanding” Association in Wroclaw. They organized cultural and educational meetings in local communities, presentations of cultures and traditions of their countries conducive to understanding the cultural diversity by the local community and volunteers as well. They also organized discussion meetings (debates, workshops) for volunteers, local youth, social activists, journalists, local authorities etc. The topics of these discussions included youth entrepreneurship, labor market, cultural diversity, European awareness, youth organizations, European citizenship, the active participation of youth, democracy, freedom of speech. They also assisted in the ongoing activities of the organization (intercultural projects, cultural events). They were involved in contacts with the media, creation and promiton of information materials. The main objective of the project was: to acquire new competences by young people, personal development of the volunteers, to increase their employability, to develop understanding of cultural diversity among the volunteers and the local community; intercultural learning of youth; to raise awareness of the specific of youth work; the sharing of best practices in the field of youth work. Volunteers worked 5 days a week with the support of an experienced coordinator representing the Host Organization. Mentor provided the individual support them. The result of the project is acquiring new competencies and skills by volunteers, increase understanding of cultural diversity in local communities of Lower Silesia and the use of project results in the activities of volunteers after the project, particularly in youth work and youth organizations thanks to the best practices presented to them.
