Intercultural compentent by battling prejudices

In this project a new validation method of intercultural compentences will be developed which can be used by Europan high schools to monitor the development of these skills amongst their pupils. This method will be conducted via Design Based Research. Both partnerschools are situated in a region, where an open mind could be clouded by prejudice amongst peers and parents. Naaldwijk is situated in the Westland. In the Westland there are many job opportunities for people working in the field and in greenhouses where they are picking and plucking vegetables and flowers and plants. In the last couple of years the number of Polish men and women applying for these jobs increased. In spite of the fact that many of the Polish immigrants already decided to stay in the Netherlands, there is a big gap between the original population of the Westland and the newcomers. One does not know each other This situation also affects the mindset of the children who attend the Lentiz | Dalton MAVO. In general our youngsters verbalize their prejudices more often, due to a lack of knowledge and understanding. Through this project we would like to achieve a better mutual understanding and a more deepened knowledge on discrimination, racism and the results this behaviour could have. All participating youngsters have to be able to make up their own minds based on the gathered knowledge and insights and verbalize their opinion in a sophisticated manner, in which they show respect for the culture and situation of the other person. In Poland the youth are also influenced in a way we would like to influence in a positive way. They could be influenced by media about Dutch people sometimes adopting an attitude toward Poles that ‘borders on discrimination’. This is a quote from the Polish ambassador Janusz Stanczyk to the Netherlands. He also states that local and national politicians and media sometimes spread negative stories about Poles, which could influence the national (and thus Westlandse) feeling that hosting Poles in the Netherlands could not be a good development. These stories are strengthened by statements Dutch politicians. It must not be forgotten that these statements appear in media stories seen by Poles in Poland. A result could be that Poles will avoid the Netherlands in the future whilst considering working abroad. Another result is that Poles have more prejudices against the Dutch, a development which is noticed.Summarized the objectives of this project are:(1) Developing a new validation method of intercultural compentences which can be used by Europan high schools to monitor the development of these skills amongst their pupils. This method will be conducted via Design Based Research. (2) Develop intercultural skills amongst involved pupils during the project. (3) Disseminating the validation method amongst Eureopean high schoolsFull details of the results expected from this project are listed in the respective sections on outputs and training activities. They are summarised as:Products:(1) A validation method for intercultural competences derived from Design Based Research, which can be used by European high schools to monitor the development of pupils in this field. (2) Revised educational material Anne Frank House: travelling exhibition; training for pupils; assignments graphic novel. (3) Revised educational material Galicia Museum: debate training pupils, training pupils guide tour Silberring, assignments graphic novel. (4) an interactive web site (WordPress) which will be used to disseminate and publicise the activity of the project, incorporating a blog which will be up-dated by all project partners; a dedicated YouTube channel to share and disseminate case studies and video tutorials; a Google analytics feed to track and monitor use and to feed into the dissemination processes. This is not an intellectual ouptut, since the website won't be kept up after the project. Dissemination occurs via the project partners (see Dissemination for further details)Experience and processes(1) establishment of a European wide learning network for teachers and educational staff of musea. (2)educational design of validation method definitions based on practice and evaluation as well as usability and pedagogical principles(3) opportunities to experience participation in a European/International project including language opportunities, exchange of cultural perspectives and sharing of ideas for pupils, teachers, policy advisors, coordinators and managementPolicy lessons(1) guidance materials and advice for local decision-makers (e.g. Deans, PVcs, Learning & Teaching, Principals) relating to the adoption and sound pedagogical use of validating intercultural competences as a fixed part of education. (2) advice and reference materials for national/international associations and organisations with a remit for validating intercultural competences and schools involved in this field.
