(Inter)cambiamos! - Experiencing history together Since the beginning of the international financial and economic crisis a renaissance of the concept of the nation state could be observe in the EU, which significance had continuously lost its relevance through the process of European integration over the past decades. Discussions about national-focused "solutions", a questioning of the common currency and a rising popularity of thinking in "we" and "others"-patterns are clear symptoms. A social consequence of this development is the (re-)strengthening of stereotypes, resentment and national identities. The goal of our project is to escape these "new" boundaries in thinking through personal contact, shared exploration of the past and the present and to disseminate the foundation of a nationalist thinking. With young people from Spain and Germany, we want to embark together to explore the historical experiences of both countries, to discover the way of dealing with this past and to discuss and reflect the present-day similarities and contradictions. The goal is to develop a common perspective of a European history and discuss the challenges that all EU countries are faced. By mutual visits, exchange and discussion, we want to strengthen these perspectives. In the first phase of the project, we visit with a group of 17 historical and politically interested teenagers and young adults from 19 to 30 years, our partner group in Madrid. For eight days we will jointly consult with them places and meet people who are connected in one way or another with the history of the civil war and the Franco dictatorship, we will meet witnesses reporting on the life and resistance against his totalitarian regime, will reflect about our own prejudices that exist in the present day about the "the other" and talk with people who experience the daily life of the crisis in Spain up close. We hope that all members of the groups can achieve an increased understanding, what similarities lie in this divided political-historical context and find it easier to change their point of view. In the second phase, we plan (approx. in the forthcoming year) to travel with young people from Spain by Germany. The program will be "turned around": we will visit memorials, which deal with the period of Nazi dictatorship, will meet people, who can report of this time and will take in the view of the current crisis policy. We want to learn new things, throw old ones overboard, change perspectives, share (hi)stories, engage with other perspectives, discuss critically. Mutual encounters and the willingness to discover new perspectives are the basis to think solidaric about a common future. In this sense: (Inter)cambiamos!
