Integration and Education Online

The purpose of the IEOL Partnership was to explore the possibilities of social media in teaching and learning in the context of adult education. The five partner organizations, from Finland, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain, were institutions involved in non-formal or formal adult education. Since social media is a part of everyday life, the partners felt the need to study its pedagogical implications, especially with target groups in danger of social exclusion, such as senior citizens and unemployed persons. Each organisation was interested in promoting the use of social media as a way to increase social integration and intercultural communication. At the first stage of the partnership, teachers participated in workshops and learned how to use the selected social media tools (blogs, Google documents and Picasa, as well as Moodle in one partner organization). In brainstorming sessions, new course ideas and course plans were developed. At the second stage of the partnership, the courses were put into practice and students were trained to use the selected online tools. Course topics varied from English and ICT skills to photography and history. As the project progressed, teachers and learners experimented with several other social media applications, such as Skype, Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr. Intercultural communication was encouraged and despite the lack of a common language, the students established their own Facebook group in which they shared photographs etc., using online translation tools to assist communication.Through joint reflection, partners identified good practices as well as challenges. The adult learners who participated in the courses utilizing social media were actively involved in the process of evaluating and developing the courses. The final outcome of the Partnership is an online dossier of course ideas and descriptions as well as the good practices concerning the use of social media in adult learning in the partner orga
