Transportation of passengers and goods increases dramatically in the South Baltic Sea area. However, existing infrastructure and transport solutions are not enough equipped to manage the growth in an efficient and sustainable way. The challenging development called upon joint actions among organisations in several countries and on various levels. In the Baltic Gateway project, regional and local authorities, ports, transport authorities and private stakeholders in seven countries, joined forces to develop a common transport strategy. It resulted in the Baltic Gateway Quick Start Programme –a unique priority list of transnational investment projects agreed upon by regional political leaders in the area.Within the project, a number of studies were carried out and reports produced. Workshops and conferences were organised, where experts, politicians and private stakeholders gathered to discuss challenges and potentials for the transport system and how it can contribute to regional development and growth. The work was divided into four work packages:Work package 1 dealt with the South Baltic Sea area in a European and Global Perspective, as a sustainable region relying on waterborne transport. A number of reports on transport flows and future trends in the South Baltic Sea were published. The work included studies of transport flows and the transport infrastructure, regional impact of different transports scenarios and analysis of future capacity problems.Work package 2 focused on cohesion in the area through improved accessibility. Selected corridors and bottlenecks were investigated and concrete investments prepared. Development along the corridors Øresund-Gedser-Rostock-Berlin, Copenhagen-Ystad-Swinoujscie-Wroclaw, Copenhagen-Blekinge-Klaipeda-Vilnius, were studied. Road telematics installations for variable speed limits were installed and tested on road E22 in Blekinge. A prefeasibility study of new railway route between Kristianstad-Southwestern Skåne were carried out.Work package 3 promoted sustainable transport and improved intermodal solutions through co-operation between private and public stakeholders. The intermodal freight market was analysed and concrete actions for improved intermodal solutions were proposed. Twinning arrangements between the ports of Karlshamn-Klaipeda, Trelleborg-Rostock, Karlskrona-Gdynia and Ystad-Swinoujscie were initiated. A system concept was developed for a cross-docking centre adapted to the conditions in Lübeck-Travemünde. An ICT based dangerous goods management system was developed in Port of Lübeck.Work package 4 focused on political support and commitment around the emerging results. A political dialogue on regional transport co-operation in the South Baltic Sea area were initiated, which resulted in agreement on priority actions included in the Baltic Gateway Quick Start Programme. Achievements: A main result of the project is a concrete programme with transport priorities – the BALTIC GATEWAY QUICK START PROGRAMME – agreed upon by regional political leaders in the SBSa. The conclusion of the political agreement on the Quick Start Programme proved that the initiated by project new networks and partnerships at different levels in the field of transport and regional development are working. This also proved that the dissemination of projects outputs and immediate results was very efficient in reaching the relevant target groups. The project managed to achieve also the spin-off effects leading to new Interreg-initiatives like Baltic Gateway PLUS and East-West Transport CorridorOn the most conrete level, thanks to the investments realised within the project lifetime the installations of road telematics for variable speed limits on road E22 was realised in region Blekinge in Sweden. Conducted studies on cross-docking centre in Lübeck-Travemünde resulted in a offer of private investment to realize the solution.
