INTEGRATING THE GREEK - BULGARIAN TOURISM PRODUCT (IG-BTP)

The overall objective of the proposed project is to provide tourist organizations and firms in Kavala/Thassos and Bansko the information they need in order to improve their operations in response to the perceptions of their customers and therefore increase their profitability. The overall objective of the proposed project is divided into three sub-objectives: The first sub-objective is to identify the actual information and knowledge gaps of the tourist organizations in the regions, Kavala, Thassos and Bansko. The second sub-objective includes the supply of accurate and reliable feedback to these organizations based on their identified needs (verified through scientifically based research). The third sub-objective focused on the training and development of tourist organizations and firms executives based on research findings, the latest scientific approaches to tourism management-marketing and the specific characteristics of Greek and Bulgarian tourists.Higher competitiveness will stimulate the local cross–border economy and generate multiplying affects on unemployment reduction, social cohesion and standard of living. It is also expected to strengthen the relationships between the neighbors, increase investment efforts and ensure continuous improvement. The ultimate objective is to transform the cross-border area to an economic and investment centre with multiplying benefits on the economic and social life of all its residents. A long term objective is to establish the proper framework that will ensure the sustainability of cooperatioon between technological - academic institutions and tourist business organizations, where academic institutions will orientate their research towards the direct needs of the local tourist companies. Expected Results: The implementation of the proposed project is expected to bring specific immediate results, some of which are described below. The implementation will lead to the establishment of a dynamic communication link among the participating companies and the TEI of Kavala, which will help to increase the local tourist product competitiveness. It is expected that tourist organizations in the cross-border area will improve the quality of their services achieving high customer satisfaction and loyalty. Moreover we foresee stimulation of the local cross-border economy by attracting new tourst investments. The utilization of educational and technological institutes resources (educated and qualified staff, previous experience, sufficient infrastructure, etc.) will enhance business organizations position in the market adopting various marketing strategies.Furthermore, under these circumstances new job opportunities will be created combating at the same time the unemployment that afflicts both areas. In addition, the communication that will be developed between the parties across the selected area is estimated to stimulate and finally establish the relationship between the two countries. Entities from both areas will benefit though a bond between neighbors and sufficient infrastructure will be set to support similar efforts in the near future.
