Integrating Telecollaborative Networks into University Foreign Language Education
Date du début: 1 oct. 2011,

Foreign language (FL) Tele-collaboration involves virtual intercultural interaction and exchange between classes of FL learners in geographically distant locations. This project aims to achieve the effective integration of FL Tele-collaboration into EU Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and thereby to achieve key aims of the Bologna process. To date, concepts such as the virtual campus in European HEIs have focused mainly on enabling students to access other university programmes without physical mobility. However, the Bologna process implies that academic mobility should not only provide access to courses, but should also contribute to the development of intercultural competence, respect for diversity and linguistic pluralism. This project takes various steps to ensure this form of virtual mobility, FL tele-collaboration, can be more effectively employed in order to achieve these aims.A preliminary study (O’Dowd, 2011: Language Teaching Journal) and other research (Belz & Mueller-Hartmann, 2003: Modern Language Journal) found that tele-collaboration remains a peripheral activity in HEIs and is relatively unknown as a form of virtual mobility. Consequently, this project first aims to raise awareness among HE educators, students and their institutions of tele-collaboration and, second, to lower institutional and practical barriers that inhibit its integration. The actions include:1) An extensive survey of students, educators and decision-makers to identify reasons for its limited impact.2) Production of a virtual platform with resources for educators (a partner-finding tool, resources and a databank of practitioners’ experiences) and for students (e-portfolio, guidelines) to facilitate the implementation of tele-collaboration.3) Development of a network of universities and practitioners through training workshops and online exchanges.4) Dissemination measures such as the publication of research, conference presentations, workshops & holding a conference.
