As a follow up of the project NeLoC projecz InLoc aimed at further improvement of the networking between logistics centres, ports and other logistics operators in the Baltic Sea Region. The project also analysed spatial and environmental consequences of logistics centres and aimed at removing bottlenecks in port-hinterland connections. Furthermore, the project tried to improve the compatibility of ICT based networks. Dissemination of knowledge about logistics centres was also one overall project objective. The work of InLoc was carried out by a consortium of universities, cities, ports, ministries and logistics centres.Integrating Logistics Centre Networks in the Baltic Sea Region (InLoC) was a project, which aimed at improving the competitiveness and attractiveness of the Baltic Sea region (in relation to other European regions) through transnational co-operation in spatial planning, and through the development of transport and communication links. InLoC stimulated the business sector of the region by creating better conditions for logistics operations, which in turn resulted in the creation of innovative co-operation networks for all actors in transport chains and related to logistics centres. Achievements: The project produced several reports and studies in order to promote the development of logistics centres in the BSR. For instance, a report on joint marketing of logistics centres was produced as well as a brochure on marketing and dissemination of intermodal transport solutions. Studies that were elaborated on aiming at a further enhancement of the logistics networks also included technical aspects of logistics centres, measures for linking international transport networks to national, regional and local transport systems as well as themes like short sea shipping and business networks. A feasibility study and demonstration of a hinterland hub operation (dry port concept) revealed that the main interest groups in BSR in general have a positive attitude towards the concept. The relations between logistics centres in a broad sense and spatial planning including environmental and territorial aspects were analysed in several case studies. Case studies on territorial impact assessments (TIAs) were carried out in Finland, Estonia, Poland and Lithuania. In addition, a strategic environmental assessment (SEA) of an investment related to the establishment of a logistics centre in Poland was produced. Furthermore, comparisons were made between spatial planning systems in each country as related to the development of logistics centres. Several studies on hinterland connections to ports illustrated the local conditions and needs of the participating regions.Transport and logistics processes are often carried out in co-operation between different branches of the same company and also between companies in order to achieve synergies. Linking of electronic networks in order to support and further enhance these existing physical networks is needed on a BSR level. InLoc managed to outline examples of standardised interfaces between the networks, and technical aspects were examined and turned into feasibility studies and possible solutions.
