The aim of the project is the elaboration an integrated spa development strategy based on the cross-border cooperation between the Univerity of Szeged and the partners. The strategy will support the harmonized health tourism development in the relevant cross border region. In the 50 km wide zone of the main traffic route (Budapest-Belgrade axis) of this region there are a lot of spas with different characters and possibilities. The planned strategy will be elaborated for this ca. 30 spas by the help with the researchers and the operational know-how of the project partners. On the one hand, the strategy will harmonize the visions and action plans of the project partners, on the other hand, it will create a common development program and define right service structure for the each spa in the relevant region. The process of strategy-building based on researches (University of Szeged), operational experience (project partners), and common workshops, forums The 30 spas in the target area attract ca. 2,5 million visitors per year. After the huge developments in the Hungarian side (eg. Mórahalom, Szeged) the number of visitors increased, but a lot of new establishments are malfunctioning due to the isolated development and the false service structure. The spas in the Serbian side are smaller, but the Hungarian sample roused the Serbian municipalities to action and they want to develop the spas apace. The main elements of the common strategy building are: correct situation analysis, harmonization of the development concepts in the zone of the main traffic route of the tourists; know-how transfer and cross-border research between the Hungarian and Serbian partners, and partnership buildings. Instead of rivalry, the strategy goals to form a partnership between the project partners and between the 30 relevant spas (stakeholders), which could contribute to the harmonized and differentiated spa developments. Achievements: In a 50-km-wide zone of the main traffic route (Budapest-Belgrade axis) in this region, there are a great number of spas with different characteristics and possibilities. The aim of the project was the elaboration of an integrated spa development strategy to support harmonised health tourism development in this cross-border region. The planned strategy was elaborated for 30 spas with the help of the project partners in terms of research and operational know-how. The strategy was harmonised with the visions and action plans of the project partners, it created a common development programme and defined the right service structure for each spa in the region. The process of strategy-building was based on research (University of Szeged), operational experience (project partners), and joint workshops and forums. The 30 spas in the target area attract about 2.5 million visitors annually. Large strategic developments on the Hungarian side lead to an increase in the number of visitors. However, there are still many new establishments that are operating less successfully due to isolated development and problemtaic service structure. Spas on the Serbian side are smaller, but the Hungarian examples urged Serbian municipalities to take action and improve their facilities. Instead of rivalry, the strategy aimed to foster the formation of partnership between the project partners and the 30 relevant spas (stakeholders) in order to contribute to harmonised and distinguished spa development.
