Integrated management in the SME (QUALITY SME)

The concept of sustainable development is still little known in the enterprises of the Atlantic Area. However, a sustainable management of their economic activities would help them to strengthen their competitiveness considerably. In this connection, the QUALITY SME project is intended to detect the environmental impacts of the activities of SMEs and address these by creating services and management tools in the domains of quality, the environment and the prevention of risks at work. The project also foresees an adjustment to the policies of management of the territory, which will then be put into practice by means of joint strategies. The project will thus contribute to promoting co-operation and exchanges of experience among SMEs, and in the longer term to improving the competitiveness of the Atlantic Area. Achievements: Publication of documents for training in integrated management of quality, the environment and health and safety at work. Publication of documents to raise awareness in SMEs of the different company management systems. Websites: www.quality-sme.com (multilingual), www.quality-sme.org, www.quality-sme.net, as a means of disseminating the various activities developed in the project and a service platform for SMEs. To create a dynamic website, the regional teams can add updates and feed the site with interesting information. Training sessions in integrated management of quality, the environment and health and safety at work in SMEs have been developed, aimed at technicians and executives in companies in the Atlantic Area. A "guide to integrated management of quality, the environment and health and safety at work in SMEs" has been produced (900 copies). It is available for download on the project website and on CD and is based on the ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001:1996 et OHSAS 18001:1999 management standards A specific guide to integrated management in the ceramics industry has been created. 150 copies have been produced in Portuguese A manual on integrated management addressed to executives and business managers has been printed (30 copies). A survey on the penetration of integrated management systems has been conducted with a view to creating a guide to the advantages of setting up integrated systems. 12,500 copies have been made to communicate the benefits of these systems. Development of a management software program, creation of a skills network and updating of external documents online.
