Inspiring Science Education as part of the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme
Date du début: 31 déc. 2014, Date de fin: 30 déc. 2015 PROJET  TERMINÉ

Coláiste Cois Life is participating in the Inspiring Science Education project, which brings together 5,000 schools across Europe in the promotion of new teaching and learning methods. The ISE project aims to promote the use of Inquiry Based Learning in schools, in science subjects in particular. Furthermore, the ISE project envisages the integration of digital tools and resources into the classroom on a regular basis, for use by both teachers and students. By employing these new teaching methods, and by making effective use of digital resources in the classroom, it is hoped to inspire young people in increased engagement with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects, and to pursue their interests in these fields. To empower teachers to use these new approaches effectively, increased training was required. Therefore, five of the science teachers in Coláiste Cois Life engaged in Erasmus+ activities in Portugal to develop their skills and attitudes. The teachers who participated in these activities became familiar with the implementation of IBL methods and comfortable in using ICT within the classroom, which lead to increased opportunities for students to engage with digital tools in a school setting. By participating in the Inspiring Science Education project, the participants in the Erasmus+ activities also had the opportunity to share their new skills and knowledge with teachers across Europe, through the Inspiring Science Education portal. The teachers were able to share learning scenarios they created, incorporating Inquiry Based Learning methods, and utilising the various eTools they have used, or indeed created, with other interested educators. School management and leadership is also involved in the process of change in Coláiste Cois Life by participating in activities which will accentuate their skills and competence in managing people, teams and motivating and inspiring the teachers of the school to embrace the changes taking place. The Deputy Principal attended a Summer Academy in Greece aimed at school leadership, with the intention of investigating novel teaching and learning methodologies, as well as being introduced to the concept of change management within an organisation. Being part of the Inspiring Science Education project will, it is hoped in the medium to long term, encourage more students, especially female students, to consider taking STEM subjects at Leaving Certificate level, and to pursue a path in this field through their third level education.
