Inklusion als Querschnittsaufgabe der neu gegründeten Sekundarschule Geldern-Issum

The newly founded Sekundarschule Geldern-Issum is one of the first of its kind in the district of Kleve. As an educational institution where students of all abilities learn together for a longer period, the Sekundarschule initiates a project entitled “Safeguarding Inclusion – Task of the newly founded Sekundarschule Geldern-Issum”. The school cares for students of a particularly strong diversity, including:a) students with a statement of “special educational needs”, most of them with either social and emotional difficulties or learning difficulties and some with communication problems b) students with a whole range of recommendations for all types of middle/secondary schools c) students with no or very low German language skills (esp. refugees)Against the background of this strong diversity, the lack of material and human resources and the fact that most teachers have not been trained for inclusive teaching , the newly founded school is in a constant process of being developed. Inclusion and prevention, including “Drop-out” prevention programmes have been identified by the school community as the top issues on the agenda. The project aims at providing best practice guidance from European schools that have a comparatively long tradition of inclusive teaching and a wide repertoire of innovative approaches. This is meant to enable the staff to build consensus on inclusive schooling in general, to agree upon the ways it can be put into practice. Lastly this will help the staff to develop action strategies thus setting the path in teaching practices as well as in the organization of the school. In tangible terms it is planned - to provide all 3 teachers who - together with the school management staff - are in charge of programme work with best practice experience of inclusion and prevention- to consequently promote the programme development and profile building of the school- to supply the staff who are involved in inclusive teaching with support and action strategies - to allow staff teaching foreign languages to strengthen their language skills in a country where the target language is spoken and to be upskilled with regard to inclusive teachingThe scheme aims to support the upskill in the fields of inclusion and prevention of ten staff members representing 3 different groups:- 3 members of the steering group for school development (one SEN teacher, one class teacher of an inclusive class and an EFL teacher and at the same time responsible for Erasmus+ and eTwinning activities). They will attend one-week best practice courses in Finland, Norway or Iceland and South Tyrol to receive impulses on inclusive teaching and school organization thus promoting programme work- 3 members of the staff teaching in inclusive classes plus the school’s social worker. They will also attend one-week best practice courses as described before, for them the focus, however, is on the practical and strategic approach. One of the teachers will attend a course in Finland focusing on the prevention of early school drop-out.- 3 EFL-teachers, all of them teaching in inclusive classes, will attend two-week courses in UK or Ireland focusing on inclusion in EFL-classes and on refreshing and updating their language skills.Finally it should be mentioned that the newly founded Sekundarschule Geldern-Issum is already very active in cooperating with European schools in the framework of eTwinning and Erasmus+ strategic partnerships. These activities will certainly gain further impetus through new contacts with colleagues from many European countries.
