TERMINÉ
The PISA results (2012) show that 22.1% of European students were low achievers in maths. Which means that more than one out of five youngsters in Europe is not equipped with that basic skill necessary for numerous valuable job in our current economy. The Commission has the objective to lower this number to 15% in 2020 but, so far, in many countries the progression is weak when the level is not simply lowering. To counter that, there is a movement is emerging in the last 10 -15 years all around Europe with the creation of museums, centres or houses of mathematics to promote a non-formal approach of the mathematics who has a proven effect on the mathematic skill of the youngsters and above all on their engagement with mathematics. However, so far, that trend is mostly “stuck” in specific institutions, a few only in Europe. This project, gathering a specialized institution on the non-formal learning of mathematics, schools and training centres, believe that it should not be the case and that we should expand that approach to schools and training centres all over Europe. So, the Informath project has the following aims:1. Improving the mathematical skills of the youngsters2. Developping the use of the normal education on mathematics in education (schools or else)3. Creating accessible and practical tools in Open Source In order to do that, partners will create:1. A training course on the use of the non-formal approach of mathematics in education2. A manual on the creation of activities and tools for the non-formal approach of mathematics and a curriculum to adapt them to the needs of the education system3. 3 specific toolkits able to be adapted by any education stakeholdersThe partners will develop and test a module for Train the trainers addressed to teachers and trainers and of their organisations. This course, hosted on the Moodle platform, will be an Open Educational Resource, 3.0 Creative Commons licensed, The trained teachers and trainers will lead the creation of 5 pilot actions (one per country, lasting 24 h for 20 pers. each), where youngsters will experienced the non-formal approach of mathematics in general and the toolkits produced in particular. The toolkit creation responds to the lack of existing OER on the non-formal approach of mathematics while the Guidebook will give the opportunity to every interested teachers and trainers to expand its activities on the topic. Both will be fully accessible to any interested parties. One exemplar of each toolkit will be built with the sole purpose to be loaned for free to organizations in Europe. All these creations and the non-formal approach of mathematics in general will be presented during the international and national dissemination events. With this creation, we, therefore hope to have the following impact at several level:A) Learners (including disadvantaged groups):- 120 learners take part of the local pilot sessions- improve their motivation and taste for mathematics. - increase their skills related to mathematicsB) Teachers:- 12 Teachers take part in the train the training course in Greece (C1)- 150 trainers registered on the course before the end of the project- increase their pedagogical and technical skills- increase of the knowledge level about the usage of non-formal learning approach in general- increase of the knowledge level about the usage of non-formal learning approach of mathematics- increase of their possibilities of exchanging experiences and getting linked with other EU teachers of maths- develop competences in mathematical training- Employability increased thanks to the acquisition of new skillsC) Organisations - at least 240 organisations are addressed in the project, of which at least half of it use the training module and/or one of the other outputs- implementation of the approach in their training activities- improvement their staff skills implementing the Train the trainers actionD) stakeholders - at least 240 stakeholders are addressed in the project who then have more awareness about the need of using new educational and training practices on mathematics- more awareness about the importance of the benefits and possibilities about the non-formal learning of mathematicsE) project partners:- increase competence in developing specifics OER- increase competences in staff (trainers taking part in the module train the trainer), project developers- New products to implement in own training activities- New in house training program for staff- Creation of new partnerships
