River basin planning has a long tradition in water protection terminology, but new whole Europe approach has been adopted when Water framework directive (WFD) come into force. According to WFD all European river basins should be covered by river basin plans with ultimate goal to reach good ecological status or potential in all waterbodies. Baltic Sea is one of the most fragile marine areas in Europe with very sensitive brackish water oriented flora and fauna. It has been suffering of heavy eutrophication and enrichment of harmful substances. Due to the objectives of WFD and the schedule of its implementation, basic data collection, waterbody status assessment and development of river basin management plans will require significant efforts in all member states. To clarify and analyse ambiguous and conflicting interests of water course planning,Project was focusing on river basin planning approach adopted in the Water framework directive (WFD). The main aims of the project have been following: to identify demands coming from different directives and conventions related to the use of river basins as well as river basin management, to find out how these demands are expressed at the regional scale land use planning, what are the most common problems Baltic Sea river basins, could any common tools be used to solve these problems. Achievements: River basin management handbook, specific report of European water legislation and numerous smaller reports including also final symposium proceedings.Altogether six tools developed and utilized in case studies are collected to and are freely downloadable and/or available for further use.Watersketch has also increased co-operation between different European projects including Entracop, Cycleau, SPARC and Trabant by organizing a common workshop and other activities. Main results of Watersketch were also presented to water specialists from non-member states in Baltic Sea Day workshop in St. Petersburg. Also several Russian and Belarusian experts participated the final seminar of the project in Finland.
