IN-SITU, a training in site-specific theatre tools was a training programme that took place in Budapest, Hungary from the 11th-18th April 2015 initiated by the Firestarter Network and developed by Makeshift Ensemble (IRL) and Artemisszio Alapitvany (HUN). In 2012 at the second Firestarter Networking meeting in Ommen (NL) we identified site-specific theatre, and particularly it's use in a socially engaged artistic context is a very exciting tool to use, interrogate and integrate as a non-formal educational tool that fosters creativity, inter cultural learning and social responsibility within the youth work context.
The primary objective of the training was to provide the participants with a shared tool set and vocabulary to use site-specific theatre as a form in its own right and discover it’s possibilities in a youth and social work context while also equipping them with skills and new approaches to engage with a local community and an urban landscape in their own local projects.
The participants involved in the project were youth workers and theatre artists working primarily with young people from the six partner countries (Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Serbia, Czech Republic, France) with experience working with urban communities and/or having had some prior experience with site-specific theatre, who wanted to expand their skills and who were interested in combining innovative theatre approaches with youth work to expand their tools and their possibilities in both fields.
First an on-line pre-departure training took place on the artescommunity.com platform that introduced participants to the local context, basic principles and kick-started their thinking around the use of site-specific theatre as a tool in youth work and within their own particular locality.
This was followed by the training course made up of distinct blocks. Introduction to site-specific theatre tools; reflection on possible uses in youth work and introduction to anthropological approach and interviewing skills; developing of an artistic idea and project in a local context; a public presentation of short performances developed by the participants; and a final day of reflection, evaluation of the learning..
The methodology used in carrying out the training consisted of games, practical theatre workshops, a public performance and public conversation, round table discussions, outdoor activities, one on one mentorship as well as small group discussions and a daily moment for the participants to reflect on their learning and evaluate their process in smaller groups.
The practical outcomes of the training course was a public performance - 'Invasion in the 8th' that took place on the 17th April in and arround Golya Presszo, a short documentary and a small booklet developed about the findings of the project as well as an information page on the artescommunity.com about the same. Another result is the learning of the participants who have broadened their horizons about approach to youth work and socially engaged theatre practice, learned new theatre and creative research skills and processes, broadened their professional network, shared experiences and learnt about other cultures and practices and finally gained the ability to plan and execute projects in the local community.
Importantly the training had an impact on the local community due to it's site specific nature and our close collaboration with Golya Presszo, on the future local and international projects of the partners and the Firestarter Network and very importantly on the methodology of partner organisations around working with young people. On a longer term this learning and impact will result in a stronger cooperation between theatre makers and youth workers on exciting and high quality projects which will ultimately lead to closer cooperation between these sectors.
