The context and background of the project is that as a school we have identified that ICT should be utilized to a greater extent to support the teaching and learning of pupils with special needs. While our staff has great expertise in special needs, ICT has been identified as an area which is fast developing and in order to support our pupils with special needs we need to learn new skills in the area of technology to facilitate the progress and development of pupils with special needs in all subject areas and in particular literacy and numeracy. Our staff wish to enhance their range of skills and teaching methodologies in this area and that this in turn will impact on the teaching of learning in our school . It will also support us in developing resources which may be of help to the wider European Community though the e-twinning website.By asking our staff (all qualified teachers and Classroom Assistants) to attend these courses, we are ensuring the development of high quality effective digital resources, which can be utilized by others. The description of the activities, methodologies that will be utilized in the 7 courses are outlined in detail in the links provided:-Digital Extra Programme which can be found on http://www.eucourses.eu/digital-extra/what-is-digital-extra.-Sharing Landscapes Programme which can be found on http://www.eucourses.eu/sharing-landscapes/what-is-sharing-landscapes,There will be 31 staff from St. Ita's and St. Joseph's attending 7 courses and one preliminary visit to the UK (to plan the the initiative) over 24 months.In the short term we hope to improve the use of ICT to support our pupils in teaching and learning. We also hope to improve standardized scores in literacy and numeracy. We will develop digital materials which will enhance the teaching and learning of our pupils in all subject areas. The skills learned will then be utilized collectively to ensure and development of digital resources which can be used in other schools in the long term. My vision for this initiative and those that participate in it is that it will continue the necessity of adopting a life long learning attitude amongst staff in relation to ICT and the ever progressing educational arena of technology. The long term effects will be on staff learning in ICT, on pupil learning in literacy, numeracy and ICT and on the learning of the wider and global community through the publication of our results and resources on line.
