Maize is one of the most important ingredients of feed formulations worldwide. Csongrad county and Vojvodina share the same climatic conditions, which are highly favorable for maize production. However, the cultivated maize hybrids differ on the two sides of the border. Several fungal pathogens are able to infect maize, and their mycotoxins may cause various disease symptoms. One of the aims of the project is to examine the resistance level of the most frequently cultivated maize hybrids in the region to get information on their safety as feed ingredients, and to clarify which cultivars are suited best to these climatic conditions. Another aim of this project is to examine the mycobiota and mycotoxin contamination of maize hybrids during harvest and after storage to get insight into their effects on animal welfare. The project also aims to investigate the influence of various treatments on reduction of mycotoxin content in maize and feed for farm animal The added value of the project will extend beyond the duration of the project. Besides improving animal health, it would also benefit for humans as main consumers of animal products. The outputs of this project will lead to identification of less susceptible maize hybrids cultivated in the region, which would lead to the production of safer feed formulations. The results will enable exact evaluation of maize kernel contamination with toxigenic fungi and their mycotoxins, and their impact on animal health. The investigations will also provide data on the most effective method for preparing maize with decreased content of mycotoxins, leading to the production of high quality feed that meets all the requirements of feed safety. Finally, education of all members of the feedstuff production chain will be implemented through publishing the achievements of the project. All these outputs and results would in long term contribute to production of healthy feedstuff. Achievements: Corn is one of the most important ingredients of feed formulations worldwide. South Hungary and Vojvodina share the same climatic conditions, which are highly favourable for corn production. However, the cultivated corn hybrids differ on the two sides of the border. Several fungal pathogens are able to infect corn, and their mycotoxins may cause symptoms of various diseases to develop. One of the aims of the project was to examine the resistance level of the most frequently cultivated corn hybrids in the region in order to gain information on their safety as feed ingredients, and to clarify which cultivars are best suited to these climatic conditions. Another aim of this project was to examine the mycobiota and mycotoxin contamination of corn hybrids during harvest and after storage to obtain insight into their effects on animal welfare. The project also aimed to investigate the impact of various treatments on reducing mycotoxin content in corn and feed for farm animals. The project partners experimented with 10 Hungarian and 10 Serbian hybrids with differing resistance at the same time in Hungary and Vojvodina, and they carried out successful comparative research. The impact and application of the results of the project will extend beyond the duration of the project. Besides improving animal health, it also bene
