The importance of welding design to the global economy is known to be of significant relevance, considering its real impact.The International Institute of Welding (IIW) is a major welding organizations in which international expertise in welding and welding design is gathered and developed. IIW has developed guidance documents and technology exchange mechanisms to support companies to adopt best practice in welding. This has been a monumental effort, culminating in the installation of an unique and comprehensive training, qualification and certification systems, applied to people and companies, harmonised on a world-wide basis.The training and qualification of welded structures designers, is presently done in each country on a "national" level. The systems implemented differ from country to country, as some are technologically more advanced than others, promoting the creation of differences between industrial sectors working in these areas within the European region. This situation is disadvantageous in today's competitive market, leading to the creation of barriers to the mobility of professionals in Europe. Furthermore it disables a higher number of qualified persons and also the development of the referred technological areas. The facts, briefly described above, show how important it is to implement a harmonized training and qualification course system in the welded structures designing areas. These areas are becoming crucial in the development of new ways to design welded structures according to the new EUROCODE requirements and the need to change the traditional processes to new and more productive technologies.The impact of the project consisted in the implementation of common directives, the adaptation and promotion of an harmonised professional qualification based on an IIW Guideline. At present, an harmonised welding design training, based on the new regulations may lead to significant cost reductions. Therefore, this project has promoted the qualification in this area by promoting a commonly revised harmonised training guideline and by organizing minimum 2 pilot training courses in the consortium countries (Romania and Bulgaria).
