In the modern society a teacher must be ready to learn alongside with his students and colleagues throughout the whole life: revise not only the materials studied previously in the university, but also aspire to get new knowledge and take active part in the process of reshaping society in the dynamically changeable world. The role of a teacher has changed from "a knowledge provider" to "a leader", promoting changes and simultaneously helping to structure the knowledge gained by young people from other sources, which sometimes are more actual than teacher’s knowledge. The academic staff of the Ventspils 3rd Secondary School actively participates and realises pedagogical ideas in developing professional and ICT (information and communication technologies) competencies by cooperating with colleagues from the European area. After evaluating the situation at school we have come to the conclusion that one part of the staff is very active in writing and implementing projects, bet another has a wish to participate in these projects, in mobility programmes, in discussing pedagogical problems, but their English language level is too poor, so they are forced to stand aside. These teachers have fewer opportunities to increase their professional competence both in language activities and other spheres. To reach more qualitative results in communication and search for pedagogical solutions there is a need to increase English language competence. This will allow: 1. Enlarge the communicative language competence, improve the skills and deepen knowledge gained previously, specially emphasising the use of speaking and writing skills at work, continue education, communicate and cooperate in the modern changeable multicultural world. 2. Improve teachers’ social competences by means of communicating with colleagues and students from other countries. 3. Provide an input into cross-cultural education by introducing local traditions to the partnering states and by increasing teachers’ comprehension of what place their own traditions take in the European contest. 4. Promote tolerance and understanding among people from different countries. 5. Learn and use new educational methods and forms. The project "Plunging into Language" will be implemented during 12 month from 1.07.2014 till 1.07.2015. The main aim of the project is to develop English language competence. In the frameworks of this project 4 teachers’ exchange in the training centre of the United Kingdom is planned. The level of English language knowledge is different for each teacher so they will be allocated in the groups according to their language level. The project will be divided into 3 stages: 1. Preparing and planning. We are going to have a regular correspondence with hosting organisation, discuss project activities, organise mobility and testing, and plan the budget. 2. Implementing mobility aiming to attending intensive two-week English language courses in the United Kingdom. We are going to learn from other countries their educational methods and different pedagogical approaches in planning the course. This will give us an opportunity to compare different approaches and, probably, use them in our school. The programme of a training course involves the TaskBased method. It is the concentration of attention to solving different problems. It stimulates the increase of interest to studies, motivation to deal successfully with the task, gives an overall direction and standard scheme of gradually implementing the creation of a project. Fulfilling the task is "plunging" into language. This method includes the stimulation of curiosity, creativeness, game elements, fantasy, flexibility, intellectualism, and satisfaction. 3. Evaluating and monitoring. We are going to inform the society about the project, prepare reports and articles, organise seminars and evaluate the project. Improvement of foreign language knowledge level will give an opportunity to get new information, additional knowledge, skills and gnosis in different areas, to get acquainted with the hosting country culture and thus deepen respect to various nations and cultures.
