The “Tourism in Central Europe” project is the result of a long-lasting relationship. The SHW and our school have been working together for several years so that our students can do their traineeships abroad. The aim of the project is that our students can use the German language at a higher level than other students taking part in similar vocational training. It is important that the project helps them to get to know themselves as well. They can acquire knowledge on the area of IKT systems, the use of which is indispensable on certain areas of tourism, so it also contributes to the development of our school. The project can make the theoretical education more practical-oriented, and the practical education can get closer to the requirements of the economy. The project begins 20.12.2014 and will take place between 29 Jun-29 July 2015. Selection of the students starts in January. Students can apply for the project after it is made public. After the 20+4 students are selected, their preparation for their traineeship starts in March-April. It includes a one-week intensive education in the fields of language, social skills, information technology and etiquette. With the help of this phase, students can start their traineeships in the high-standard hotels with the necessary skills and knowledge. Before the journey, our school concludes an agreement with the German partner, in which the tasks of all participants are exactly described. The school also concludes an agreement with the students travelling to Germany in connection with the expected learning results. After every important document is ready, the students travel to Thuringia on 29 Jun. The German partner as a host institution receives the students and accommodates them in several-bedded rooms, a language training organised by the German partner takes place to brush up students’ German language knowledge. Team building and a professional trip to Erfurt take place with the participation of the host institution. On the third day get students into the hotels in groups of two. The accompanying teacher accompanies every student to their workplace to avoid loss of information and to make sure that students do their traineeship in good circumstances. The hotels give students twin rooms, warm meal once a day and they let them use the free-time equipment if students discuss the use with them in advance. The traineeship in the hotels takes place between 1 July and 28 July. The trainees work 160 hours altogether, 5 days a week, 6-8 hours a day and they have two free days a week, at least one of which is the same for both students. The students who would like to become cooks, waiters / waitresses and restaurateurs do their traineeship in several areas – Front Office, Housekeeping, Food and Beverage - of the same workplace in order to get to know the tourist industry. The students get to know the tasks of the sections mostly linked to their trades. In the Front Office they learn about the communication with guests, the distribution of rooms, and the administrative tasks. In the Housekeeping section they learn about the proper ways of tidying and cleaning rooms. In the kitchen they learn the use of kitchen equipment and utensils, the preparation and making of dishes, and the HAACP points. In the restaurant section they learn the etiquette of service and keeping contact with the guests. At the end of the traineeship a significant improvement in the students’ knowledge can be experienced. Students keep a record of their working hours during the whole traineeship, in which they also write about the type of the tasks they do, so it is possible to follow the work done. Students also fill in a work-diary in their native language. Both documents help students to improve their linguistic competences. Students’ vocabulary increases, their writing skills get better. Documentation is also helped with a monitoring visit, which takes place during the traineeship. Students are asked about their general feelings, and a mid-traineeship evaluation also takes place. On the last day students are transported to the host institution’s building, where the participants receive a certificate, which includes the evaluation of their professional and linguistic skills. Later this will be included in the students’ evaluation at school. After the students arrive home, the presentations and reports prepared by them about the project are made public. One of the effects of the project is that students’ language and IKT knowledge gets better. They are more self-confident and more independent at the end of the project than they have been before. They learn to be a participant in a process. The traineeship also contributes to the development of the training and education in our school, because students’ practical knowledge and the skills and knowledge expected by the economy get closer to each other. Our students get education and certificates meeting the European expectations in the form of Europass.
