N. Olvio Gymnasium is a small regional secondary school with students from closed and vulnerable groups (especially Roma and Muslims and a few Christians ) with limited linguistic and cultural stimuli . The student performance is low and the dropout rate large. For retaining its students, school should try to create a safe and inclusive learning environment. An environment oriented to the needs of students , which will provide the opportunity for everyone to participate equally and not only accept the value of diversity but incorporate it in the learning process. An approach to teaching with the use of new methods that allow the active participation of students and cooperation between them .
This requires training of teachers on the values of inter-cultural education and in new, more student-centered teaching methods, on the use of ICT tools, diverse assessment methods and criteria and on developing suitable teaching material.
In this direction the school is planning to train three teachers from its staff on the above issues by participating in a training seminar in Iceland, organized and carried out by a specialized organization dealing only with issues of inter-cultural education and students retention in schooling. The participating teachers belong to permanent school staff, teach Literature, Natural Sciences and Information Technology, have increased qualifications and have shown active interest in applying the principles of inter-cultural education in practice as well as the implementation of innovative teaching methods.
Teachers will participate in activities that will be organized by the coordinator and will include: study of relative inter-cultural material during preparation phase, introduction to inter-cultural education and its values using experiential methods, practicing new collaborative teaching methods and how to implement them in their particular subject , development of educational materials, digital tools and diverse assessment methods.
The school for monitoring and evaluation of the project will set up a monitoring and evaluation system, which will detect the needs of teachers , will prepare an implementation schedule , monitor its implementation, will take care of dissemination of results in school community and will compose an evaluation report upon completion of the action.
The school expects this training to become a motive for the adoption of the principles of inter-cultural education by school community, to start a renewal and modernization of the teaching process by introducing new strategies , methods , tools and materials. Be given a boost to the use of digital tools . To motivate school community to be engaged with European programs and get to know European citizenship.
