The vision of our school puts prosocial values and excellence in a central position in order to ensure equal opportunities for students and teachers in our country, Europe and worldwide. We want our students to acquire enough knowledge and develop as many competences as possible, so that they would be competitive wherever they choose to live and work.
To realise our vision and in response to the changes in the society and the newly emerging needs of the EU labour market, our school recognises the need for intensive training of teachers who will be able to raise and educate creative and conscious citizens of Slovenia and the EU. It is very important that our teachers not only acquire intercultural competence, language and communication skills, an appropriate level of digital literacy and awareness of EU citizenship, but also the relevant knowledge and skills which will enable them to develop these competencies in students through learning. These skills can be most effectively gained through international education for different reasons.
The goals of our educational project Holistic education of young EU citizens are:
1- developing intercultural competence of our teachers and students,
2- developing foreign language communication skills as well as methodology of teaching and learning strategies,
3- upgrading ICT competences in the classroom,
4- developing social and civic competencies and methods and teaching approaches to foster students' holistic development.
In order to achieve the listed goals we have carried out 18 mobilities as follows:
- Goal 1: Intercultural project management course in Portugal – 4 mobilities
- Goal 2: Immersion course in Scotland – 3 mobilities
- Goal 2: Primary CLIL course in England – 4 mobilities
- Goal 3: ICT job shadowing in Finland – 3 mobilities
- Goal 4: Mindfulness course in the Netherlands – 4 mobilities
The project has been carried out through the following activities:
• in June 2014 we organised an Erasmus + school project team consisted of 5 English teachers from 1st to 9th grade, 3 class teachers from 1st to 5th grade, the ICT and project coordinator, the headmistress, the head assistant, the school social worker and the school psychologist;
• we carried out the introductory workshop with the presentation of the project and working plan in June 2014;
• we organized all logistic needed to complete the mobilities listed above by exchanging information with our partners (obtaining information on the trainings and accommodation, notifying the project partners about the needs of our school);
• all the participants in mobilities signed all agreements prescribed;
• the project group members took part in the mobilities within which the partners carried out the agreed programs and delivered the teaching materials and literature;
• we carried out all the planned dissemination activities,
• we made more evaluations: every mobility after they had been completed and our project after each phase as well as in the end;
• we regularly monitored the implementation of our project plans by intermediate participants reports and on regular project meetings;
• we regularly reported to the National Agency by intermediate content reports and in Mobility tool;
• we monitored the funds flow using an internal developed tool;
• we immediately solved all possible obstacles mostly in collaboration and with help of the National Agency;
• we prepared the final project report.
For the implementation of the project the project-based method was used with all suitable strategies in all phases: planning, preparation, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, validation and following-up.
The impacts and results of the project are: the training in other EU countries has increased participants' motivation for intercultural learning and international cooperation, thus they have acquired the competencies that will allow the school to open further into the EU area by participating in EU exchange projects, thereby opening up more opportunities for their personal and professional development. By learning about different environment, other educational systems, new methods and strategies we have increased the awareness of the quality of our school and Slovenian educational system. We have realised that knowledge and experiences accumulated at our school are on a very high level and should be shared among teachers and professionals from other EU countries and beyond. We have built-up contacts with teachers and schools throughout Europe, which will enable the implementation of collaborative projects to a greater extent than at present. The participants in mobilities have motivated our colleagues to engage in further education and EU projects. By directing a larger number of teachers towards participating in the EU area, using modern methodologies and technology in learning and teaching our students have become more self-confident and better prepared for the challenges of the future global and EU labour market.
