Motivations for doing the project:
The school concerned with the project sincerely wishes to put an emphasis on the theme “Our school goes Europe”. The improved language and media competences of those students taking part in the specific activities offered both in Malta and Spain will guarantee a successful achievement of the set goals. Being part of the European Union is a great chance for Austria and its citizens. The positive contribution of the EU towards a better understanding and awareness of its members and towards securing a peaceful world will be an essential topic to be covered in the school´s curriculum.
In the following years diverse activities are to be performed and specific topics to be observed at our school. All teachers are to be involved in these activities so as to raise awareness with their students for the European concept, according to the various themes. The organisers of the project, Emanuela Wagner and Christiane Ortmann, both convinced Europeans, and with excellent language skills, will oversee the project to ensure the fulfillment of the objectives. The students will be encouraged to do their work experience abroad, CLIL subjects are to be dealt with in greater depth, guests students from EU countries are to be well looked after at our school, furthermore, specific events for the information and motivation of the school community as well as the local community are to be organised.
The use of technologies in the media sector, the teaching of digital competences as well as the improvement of language skills will play a major role.
Number and profile of participants:
1. Emanuela Wagner
Teaching dietetics and “Waiting on guests in English”, a subject in the CLIL group. To qualify for the latter she attended a Comenius CLIL course in Canterbury in 2009. She is qualified to assess students in the primary for the A-level exam in kitchen and restaurant management in English.
2. Christiane Ortmann
She has been teaching Spanish and as well as Culture and History for a number of years.
Courses attended:
Emanuela Wagner: “Fluency and English Language Development for Teachers”, 18. - 22. 8. 2014 in Malta (Course for the improvement of language fluency and accuracy as well as for competence in teaching English).
Christiane Ortmann: “Recursos de la web para el aula de E/LE” in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, 14. - 25. 7. 2014 (Course for handling the new media and their diverse use in the curriculum).
Objectives and future perspectives:
Understanding other nationalities through all five senses
Improving one´s language skills when talking to EU-citizens, also to those whose native language is not English or Spanish (e.g. neighbouring country CS)
Educating pupils to more open-mindedness and tolerance
Setting up future projects with a partner school in the EU
Simplifying the process of students´ exchange at our school
Introducing the European idea and the conception of life-long learning to a wide audience (students, teachers, parents, general public)Motivation for project, underlying idea: The variety of school types on hand will be the basis for a multicultural and multimedia project, which will be presented to the students of our school as well as to all the compulsory schools and the general public of the district of Freistadt.
Mode of procedure:
- Open Day
HLW: getting to know European cultures by presenting different countries, waiting on guests using English and Spanish language skills, getting to know Maltese and Spanish cuisine, designing an illustrated cookery book with English and Spanish recipes
HLW-KOME: designing posters and invitations, getting to know European cultures via the presentation of various countries, designing an illustrated cookery book with English and Spanish recipes, producing a documentary about the activities mentioned to be shown on regional TV later on, producing a roll-up to be presented to the school-leavers of secondary schools on an information evening
- Parents´ Day in January
HLW and HLW-KOME: Films produced by students on various European countries to be shown to parents, Maltese fingerfood and Spanish Tapas to be served to guests
- European Garden Eden
Event in the schoolyard - Presentation of the project with contributions of guest students from local schools and of students from our own school who have had a work experience abroad
Presentation of the cookery book, dance and musical performances in cooperation with creative education and P.E., presenting typical foreign culinary specialities and wines, designing a Mediterranean herb garden in cooperation with BIONIK.
