Context / Background
The Applicant Organisation is the University of Liverpool (UoL). UoL is a research-active Higher Education institution located in the United Kingdom with a student body of around 20,000, awarding degrees at first, second and third cycle. UoL has been active in student and staff mobility between EU countries for over 15 years. Mobility was embedded in our Strategic Plan for 2009/14 which had the stated aim to double mobility over a 5 year period, and this was almost achieved. The University is currently undergoing a Strategic Review which will generate a further Strategic Plan to cover the period 2016-2026. Whilst this process is still underway, the University has already published a Green Paper - 'Towards the 2026 Strategy' which includes student mobility under the 'Education' theme. This Student Mobility project aimed to enable students and staff from UoL to study, work or teach in other European countries during the 2014/15 academic year through the Erasmus+ programme and to receive students from our Erasmus+ partner universities at UoL.
Objectives
Operating in the above context, the objectives of the Project were:
- To enable up to 130 UoL students to study at our Erasmus+ partner institutions
- To enable up to 60 UoL students to undertake Erasmus+ traineeships
- To enable up to 14 UoL staff to teach at our Erasmus+ partner institutions
- To enable up to 2 UoL staff to participate in Erasmus+ training mobility
Number and Type/Profile of Participants
185 outbound students from UoL participated in Erasmus+ in 2014/15. 125 of these students studied at our Erasmus+ partner institutions, and a further 60 students undertook Erasmus+ traineeships. The vast majority of these students (118 students, or 94.4%) were first cycle students. The remainder (7 students, 5.6%) were second cycle students. All of the 60 students on Erasmus+ traineeships were first cycle students.
A major first cycle target group is students of modern languages (141 students, 76.22%). All of the students following Erasmus+ traineeships were Modern Language students, and 81 of the students studying through Erasmus+ were studying modern languages (64.8% of those studying abroad).
The remaining 44 UoL students who studied abroad through Erasmus+ in 2041/15 (35.2% of the total UoL Erasmus+ study cohort) can be divided into two groups: those taking professional degrees (Architecture, Medicine, Accountancy,Veterinary Science) with 34 students, and those following non professional degrees, with 10 students (Ecology, History, Business, Irish Studies, Psychology, English). 34 students (27.2% of the total UoL Erasmus+ study cohort) were following professional degrees and 10 students (8% of the total UoL Erasmus+ study cohort) were following non-professional subjects.
32 students (17.3% of the total UoL Erasmus+ outbound cohort) of students were from disadvantaged backgrounds.
10 UoL staff took part in the Erasmus+ programme in 2014/15 by teaching at one of our partner universities.
Results / impact attained
Students acquired and improved a wide range of competences through their Erasmus+ period of work or study abroad.
The top three competences acquired and improved for students on Erasmus+ study placements were:
95.97% of students on study placements perceived an increased in their ability to adapt to and act in new situations
94.35% of students could see the value of different cultures better than before their study placement
92.74% of students were more open-mindedness and curious about new challenges after their Erasmus+ study placement
The top three competences acquired and improved for students on Erasmus+ traineeships were:
100% of students following traineeships cited an improved ability to adapt to and act in new situations
98.33% of students could see the value of different cultures better than before their traineeship
98.33% had increased confidence in their own ability following their traineeship
The top three competences acquired and improved for staff on Erasmus+ teaching mobility were:
100% of staff had a reinforced/extended professional network
100% of staff had reinforced co-operation with the partner institution
90% of staff had increased their job satisfaction
The above listing of competencies makes it clear that the "Erasmus+ effect" on the outbound students and staff from UoL was far reaching in terms of adaptability and intercultural competencies for students, and for staff in terms of their professional network and their personal professional development.
