The University of Graz has participated in the Erasmus programme since its beginning and strives to further strengthen its collaboration as a pro-active partner in the Erasmus+ community.
In preparation for the new Erasmus+ programme, all former Erasmus partnerships had been thoroughly reviewed in order to re-balance mobility flows and best adapt to changed needs of the faculties. Special attention was given to under-represented subject fields and geographical areas as well as the University’s strategic focus region South-Eastern Europe (SEE). The focus was on intensifying links with partner universities where collaboration has proved fruitful.
In the academic year 2014/15, the University of Graz was successful in the implementation of the new Erasmus+ structure and in making use of all mobility schemes given in the programme. In the KA103 project period, the University of Graz successfully carried out 425 outgoing mobilities on all levels (SMS, SMT, STA, STT) and in a wide range of disciplines. In return, the University of Graz hosted about 400 incoming Erasmus+ participants (students, trainees and staff). The mobility numbers were improved in relation to the previous years despite the challenges at the beginning of the new programme implementation. Ties to long-standing partner institutions were strengthened and new Erasmus partnerships were established on the basis of the institutions’ profiles, structure, international orientation, support services for students and staff and the compatibility of study programmes and research fields.
The University of Graz is particularly satisfied to see that the outgoing mobility for training (SMT) has almost doubled in comparison to the previous years. This is partly related to the new possibility of shorter periods for traineehiships and also to the wider take up of this action line in the faculties due to better promotion. Also the new opportunity for study mobility in each cycle is well appreciated among the students and we hope to see improvement in the take up rate in the future.
The mobility of staff for the purpose of teaching and trainings continues to be a strong instrument for the internationalisation of the University. Staff exchanges contribute to internalisation at home, strengthen existing links and often lead to new collaboration and establishing new ties.
Despite the initial challenges of Erasmus+, especially in the implementation phase, the University of Graz is particularly satisfied to have successfully carried out the KA103 project in full compliance with the ECHE and with a growth in the mobility actions.
