As part of the Erasmus+ Programme and in line with the objectives set with the European Commission, as part of ECHE, Sapienza contributes to the development of a knowledge society via research, advanced education and international cooperation and an open exchange between the world academia and enterprise.
As part of the policies that have made Sapienza not only more competitive and appealing, but also the Italian reference point for major international ranking agencies [http://www.uniroma1.it/archivionotizie/la-sapienza-tra-gli-atenei-top], our internationalisation programmes, including Erasmus+KA1 mobility, have been enhanced and consolidated through the expansion of both activities and financial resources.
Sapienza has reviewed its agreements to provide high quality mobility in nearly every didactic area and with all EU countries for a total of 1345 agreements stipulated with about 500 universities.
Sapienza has implemented actions, supplemented related funding and recorded an increase in mobility activities via a series of actions that have lead to a 20% increase in outgoing mobility for a total of 1264 students. Moreover, mobility co-funding has been increased, procedures have been simplified and informative events organised to promote the new Erasmus+ opportunities. Sapienza has also supplemented EU grants with its own resources, to increase scholarships from 30 to 90 for economically disadvantaged students.
In order to remove barriers to the full recognition of mobility period studies, a new regulation has been adopted that recognises mobility periods and transfers credits for students on international mobility with a flexible approach based on learning outcome compatibility rather than mere equivalence.
Moreover, an on-line platform has been designed to register student career results and mobility data. The platform, which will be operative from 2016, will simplify and increase the transparency of all procedures. Sapienza has also appointed new faculty academic figures that will assist students in defining their educational project.
Sapienza has registered a 130% in traineeship mobility thanks to Sapienza funding that has funded all mobility cases (154 students and graduates) as opposed to the 40 financed by the EU. Moreover, this increase is also due to the increased promotion and the new procedures adopted to improve participation in these activities (single call for all traineeships, student assessment commission and revision of the management platform).
Traineeship mobility is included in the university initiatives to promote the integration of students into the working world after graduation. Sapienza also coordinates and participates in a range of traineeship projects, including the "Unipharmagraduates" Project that continues the experience begun in 2003 with the Leonardo da Vinci Programme, which in partnership with 7 Italian universities, allows students to participate in traineeships in European research centres of excellence in the chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological sectors, as well as Project "North-South" coordinated by the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” and the MAECI MIUR Fondazione CRUI internships for diplomatic careers.
Staff mobility is also significantly co-funded by Sapienza University and has once again proven to be an important opportunity for teacher training and strengthening networks and cooperation with other partner universities, as well as allowing technical-administrative staff to learn more about best practices at other institutions.
In conformity, with the guidelines of the new Erasmus+ Programme, the linguistic aspect has become particularly significant for mobility and student selection. Incoming students are required to have a B1 level of Italian. Sapienza also organises free intensive language courses with entrance tests that allow the evaluation of student results at the end of the course.
Moreover, incoming student welcome has been strengthened via the creation of a buddy system, a student work system and information desks such as the Erasmus and Faculty information centres, as well as a Welcome Week with events focusing on inter-cultural activities aimed at fostering integration in the academic environment.
