International Mobility in IPT - Quality, Innovation, Employability
Currently the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (IPT) holds agreements with almost all European countries. Its network of partners comprises the oldest and most renowned institutions that ensure accreditation and recognition and more recent ones that confer an innovative and less bureaucratic dimension. In either case academic quality and public recognition, as well as cooperation with the business sector and the labour market are crucial. No European region has been neglected and IPT has always invested on networks that can bring added value in terms of European diversity.
Since the creation of Erasmus way back in 1988, IPT considers mobility programmes as the keystone of all its internationalisation programmes (other Erasmus+ schemes such as Mundus Masters; research programmes; Culture; Interreg, etc.). IPT has always considered mobility as the backbone of all other programmes, and also of its internal quality strategy.
IPT has extensive experience in organising mobility and European projects and received the Golden award from the European Commission in 2008 and the ECTS/DS labels since 2009, with renewal for the period 2013-2016. As part of mobility programmes the following publications have been produced: "Erasmus mobility creates opportunities, European success stories", 2008, CE; "Excellence in Europe´s universities, ECTS and Diploma Supplement Label Holders 2009 & 2010. Make mobility a reality", 2010, CE; "Mobility, projects and cooperation.LLP best practices 2007/2012", 2013, ANPROALV; e " Celebrating ECTS and DS Diploma Supplement Label Holders 2009-13", 2015, EC.
Governed by Grant Agreement 2014-1-PT01-KA103-000676, in the academic year 2014/15 all allocated funds have been used up and mobility flows exceeded 100 percent. Host countries include Spain, Belgium, Czech Republic, Spain, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Turkey, Greece and France. A good gender balance has been observed in mobility flows in all categories (internships, study and training/research) with a slight female preponderance.
The overall satisfaction rate of incoming and outgoing participants have very good values with values above 90% among outgoing students and faculty, above 80% for incoming students and 100% for incoming faculty and staff.
The primary objective of mobility is concerned with three aspects: quality, innovation and employability.
Quality:
IPT follows the guidelines of the ECTS/DS labels and the Erasmus Charter granted to the institution for the years 2014-2020, that is, non-discrimination and full recognition of successfully completed periods of mobility in line with EU recommendations and exempting incoming students from any fees or charges. Monitoring and follow-up in all stages of the process (before, during and after mobility) allow adequate preparation, constant evaluation and review, ensuring that problematic situations are prevented, detected or corrected in due time.
Innovation:
Innovation in this Erasmus+ year was mainly concerned with cooperating with the job/labour market. This new phase began with the incorporation of a company headquartered on the Campus of IPT in our network of selected partners and the conclusion of an agreement for the provision of internships and connections within their extended network of partners. This allowed a clear definition of the aims and objectives as well as the skills to be acquired in internships and bring them into closer alignment with the requirements of the labour market. IPT has also invested on longer internships/placements according to the expectations of the host companies, allowing more intensive hands-on practice.
Employability:
The innovation introduced and exploited in the Erasmus+ year 2014/15, came out to give a significant contribution to the improvement of the employability of IPT students, especially the trainees involved (100% employability). In fact, all of the 10 sponsored trainees found a job on completion of their internships. One remained in the host city (Barcelona) but in another company, three remained in the host country (Spain) and were recruited by a company in Salamanca and six returned to Portugal and joined a Portuguese company. They all considered their initial salary as compatible with the skills acquired in their internships.
Based on previous successful experiences, mobility and exchange schemes, both for study and training purposes, have also been organised in 2015/16 and similarly good results are expected.
