The VUB takes part in the Erasmus+ KA103 programme to exchange students with partner institutions in Europe. Internationalisation is an important key factor for the VUB as it is a driving force to strengthen the competences of the graduated students of the University and it helps support the relation and cooperation the VUB has with other partners. In Project 2014-1-BE02-KA103-000033 225 students took part in the exchange programme, 53 students more than first planned in the grant agreement. Of these 225 students, 20 students went on a traineeship abroad, while 205 studied abroad. 49 of our students that went abroad come from a disadvantaged background, and participated in the exchange program, most of them in the form of an Erasmus studies programme. The International Relations and Mobility Office (IRMO) has activities on Campus to promote mobility to students starting from the first weeks at the University during the Kick Off where students can get basic information on mobility and are advised to attend the Go Abroad Fair one month later to obtain more information about different possibilities to go abroad. Erasmus+ offers them different options to experience an exchange, all of which are explained during this Go Abroad fair. After the Go Abroad fair that caters to all students, IRMO organises sessions together with the different faculties to explain the specific rules and destinations that are available for the different faculties. These sessions go into the details on how students should apply for an Erasmus exchange, which grants and which destinations are applicable for them. All of this information is centralised on our internal Student Platform, where students can access this information at all times.
Once selected, students receive the possibilities to follow language courses against a reduced tariff, have the possibility to participate in Language Tables and will receive the OLS language test and courses. At the end of the semester before they leave on exchange, students are invited for a final ‘take off’ session, where they receive information concerning their Grant Agreements and practical tips on going on exchange. For the incoming students IRMO has centralised all needed information concerning course schedules, information on visa's and residence permits, accommodation and how to reach the campus on the website of VUB. Upon arrival IRMO organises orientation days where the students receive a warm welcome, information concerning their course registration and how the finish their administration on the VUB campus, followed by a welcoming tour. Throughout the year, the International Relations and Mobility Office cooperates with the International Student Organisations on the VUB campus to offer students activities to engage with internationalisation on the VUB campus by for example becoming a buddy for incoming international students. Internationalisation is a key aspect in the humanist ideology of Free Enquiry that VUB represents. The Erasmus+ programme, as one of the biggest contributors to the Internationalisation at the University, has a great impact on the University as a whole. A longstanding implementation of the project ensures that our students are able to graduate with an international mindset tolerant for diversity and understanding towards an international and multicultural work environment in Brussels, Belgium and Europe. Participation in the Erasmus programme also has a positive impact on education and research where through collaboration with international partners the quality increases, as we believe that the competences, experience and knowledge retrievable within one university is insufficient to tackle the complexity of the world issues. It is through international collaboration in the fields of education and research that the VUB will be able to increase the social impact it has on society.
