The University of Huddersfield?s vision is ?To be an inspiring, innovative University of international renown? and our Strategy Map outlines our aims. The University?s International aims are to become an increasingly popular destination of choice for world class international students, to ensure our international students have an inspiring world class student experience and to become ranked as an outstanding international university. We believe that participating in the Erasmus+ programme will greatly aid the University in its aims.
We are one of the UK's top 10 providers of sandwich courses and student placements are a vitally important part of the University's overall mission in ensuring that our graduates are equipped with a good balance of knowledge, skills and experience. Being able to provide our students with opportunities to study and work abroad is essential and to operate within the Erasmus framework provides an extra dimension to their studies.
In line with our Erasmus Policy Statement, the objectives of this project are to continue to work towards our international aims, continually strengthening our links.
Overall, 66 outward mobility activities took place in 2014/15, involving 46 students participating in Erasmus+ traineeships (53 mobility activities), 6 students in ?Study? mobilities and 6 members of staff (7 mobility activities) carrying out ?staff teaching? mobilities.
Traineeships were carried out across 10 EU Countries by Undergraduate degree course students studying on the integrated placement year (year 3) of their 4 year sandwich degree courses. The students were studying a wide range of courses within four of our schools; Applied Sciences, Art, Design & Architecture, Business and Computing & Engineering.
Outward study mobilities comprised of 2nd year Undergraduate students from our Business School, 4 of whom were studying at a University in France for the full academic year and two in the Netherlands for one semester.
Teaching staff took part in staff teaching across 5 Universities in 7 EU countries.
In terms of incoming mobility activities, a total of 26 students attended the University on ?study? exchanges. Students came from 8 different EU countries and studied within our Schools of Applied Sciences, Business, Human & Health Sciences and Music, Humanities & Media.
The project has benefited both inbound and outbound students and indeed the University as a whole. Students have been provided with an invaluable, once in a lifetime opportunity to experience education overseas, life overseas and, for our traineeship students, a global working environment. The project is highly valued by the University because our students return with a heightened sense of the merits of a multicultural, global environment.
The longer-term benefits of the project to the University include having an alumni base who are globally connected and are advocates for the University of Huddersfield throughout Europe. A direct result of this initiative is the strengthening of relationships between us and the participating Universities but also companies where our students are placed which further enhances our employability narrative.
