As part of the University of Chichester?s internationalisation agenda, this year the University sent 4 students away on work placement, 4 away on study placement, and 6 staff members away on training and teaching activities. The purpose of these activities is to drive international engagement, increase the European opportunities available to students and staff, and ultimately to increase the University?s international pedagogical output. The University has a high proportion of students who are first generation Higher Education students, in the sense that they are the first people in their families to go to University. For this reason international experience is valuable for these students. As well as providing them with a formative and often life changing exposure to other countries, exchange opportunities allow participants the opportunity to consider careers or further study in the EU.
The work placement students were from the field of Adventure Education. All students on this course have to complete a work placement and the University is encouraging as many students as possible to do theirs in European companies. As this academic field is relatively new there is a lot of scope for broadening international appeal, and capacity building projects with private providers in the UK. This also feeds into the University?s international objective to build private partnerships within Europe and maximise our course relevance to business and entrepreneurship.
The staff members who travelled went on a mixture of teaching and training. Both of these funded activities are vital to the University?s goal to increase the internationalisation of staff both professionally, and departmentally. Staff who took part in training experiences were able to see examples of best practice and create development networks with European colleagues.
The mobilities which took place this year have formed a good platform from which to develop the University?s outbound mobility and further internationalisation. Importantly, this has also acted to underpin the Univesity?s inbound mobility, and deepen the scope of collaboration with European partners, as well as lend value to the University?s strategy to develop new partnerships in wider regions. Moving on to the future we are using the current returneees to promote and develop internationalisation and Erasmus take up through the use of ambassador programmes, presentation, and blogging.
