CAFRE is a land based college based in Northern Ireland. Its remit is to provide education and training for those intending to work in the land based sector. It offers programmes from QCF Level 2 (EQF Level 3 up to QCF Level 7 (EQF Level 7) Work placements are an integral component of all CAFRE Higher Education programmes. Students completing a Foundation Degree (a short cycle QCF/EQF Level 5 programme) the placement is normally 2-3 months and is weighted at 40 credits (20 ECTS credits) Those completing an Honours Degree (QCF and EQF Level 6) complete normally complete a placement of similar duration, however they also have the option of completing a placement lasting a full 12 months. Students are encouraged to undertake overseas placements and in the 2014-15 academic year approximately 10% of students did so. Most of these placements are in countries that are outside the scope of the Erasmus programme. CAFRE recognises the benefits from completing an overseas placement both in terms of the additional learning and personal development that result and also in enhanced employability. in the 2014-15 academic year, one Foundation Degree student completed a placement that was eligible for funding under Erasmus. The placement was in Holland. It lasted just over 2 months and was with a business that had been use by the College previously for a VET placement. The business involved was an equine business and the participant was involved in working with horses, the public and developing skills appropriate to the level of her programme. The evidence from the traineeship contributed to the student's Work placement module and to her overall qualification. The member of staff who participated completed a period of study in a University in Holland. This study entailed involved entailed investigating modules availability, assessment mechanisms, compatibility with CAFRE structures enrolment arrangements and student management systems. This led to the development of a partnership between CAFRE and the Institute in Holland, and as a result student exchanges have commenced.
